Chastity O’Neill comes back to her hometown after making it on her own away from her family. But, she realized she missed them and is ready for a husband and children. She’s a journalist working for the local newspaper, is 5’11” and is as athletic as her four alpha brothers. Chastity can compete with the best of the guys but finds competing with the best of the women a different proposition. To make matters more complicated, she’s still in love with her first love, Trevor Meade who is like a member of her boisterous family. I loved Chastity and she had me fall in love with this story as it’s told from her perspective. She’s funny with just a tinge of self-deprecation but confident enough to hold her own. When she connects with a dreamy trauma surgeon, Ryan Darling, things get interesting. Chastity is committed to making this relationship work as Trevor doesn’t seem to want to risk the family that unofficially adopted him and seems to be drifting back to a former relationship. Chastity’s family is big with lots of nieces and nephews and her parents have their own drama going on. They all have something to say about her life but you get the love they have for one another in everything they say and do. Lastly, her big, loveable (but not very attractive) dog Buttercup brings her own shenanigans to the mix. I’ve never laughed and cried so much reading a book. This is classic Higgins with that perfect balance of romance, humor and heartache and my only wish at the end was that this be a continuing series. Maybe if we apply some pressure we can convince her to revisit this family. They deserve another story.

Everything this book does, 1984 does better and FAR more frighteningly. Sure the idea of burning books is potent in the modern age, but destruction of language and thought itself is far, far more terrifying AND plausible in Orwell's nightmare.

I love Kathy Reichs. Similar to Patricia Cornwell. Reichs is a forensic anthropoligist in her regular job, so she brings real life experience to these books. Like her protaganist, she also splits her time between working in the US and Québec. I love hearing about life in Montreal. Again, I don't like the parts about her personal relationships. It is unwanted fluff. Again, there is nothing like a good morgue mystery. . .

This has been the only Vonnegut book I managed to finish. I really liked it, but I'm not sure why the others have failed to hold my interest. I sort of feel like his writing tends to have a very masculine vantage point, not macho, just oddly man-ish in a way I haven't been able to relate.

I enjoyed this somewhat off-beat book. It's written in a light style, rather along the lines of the Flashman novels, but the vivid and harrowing descriptions of the D-Day landings ring true. Our hero, Dick Coward, is writing his memoirs for his grandson, and we find out that he has to have a "better war" (meaning more medals for valour)than his brother James, in order to inherit the family estate. Something tells me this won't happen, but a follow-up is in the works, and I hope there'll be even more.
