This book was cleverly written and Nabokov is brilliant at staying in character. The difficult part about reading this particular novel is that one needs to remember that you are reading the story through the filter of Humbert Humbert. This book is a challenge, but it is worth the work that it takes to read it.

This book is AWESOME. If you're a fan of late 80's-era Ministry, Revolting Cocks, Skinny Puppy (Ogre), PTP, Acid Horse, Pigface (they don't actually have fans do they?),etc. or WaxTrax! Records in general--READ THIS BOOK. It's hilllllarious and probably one of the rarest of it's kind considering the genre of music it's covering. There is mention of KMFDM (including En Esch's jumping from a 3-story burning building incident) however no mention of later recordings with them on XTORT and quite a bit about Ogre of Skinny Puppy. As far as Ministry goes it's mostly about Al Jourgensen--very little about Paul Barker but what's here is entertaining, if not shocking as hell. As a huge fan of his work with these bands it was probably the best thing I've read all year since it gave so much insight into how a lot of the songs were recorded. note: The one thing that bothered me was the spelling of Sascha's and Günter Schulz's name (of KMFDM.) In this book it's spelled "Sasha" and "Gunther" (or something to that effect). WTF? "Was I turning into Phildo?" "Ouuuuuutstanding!"

This is the first book of a series, Heroes of Olympus, which picks up not long after the end of the author's series called Percy Jackson & the Olympians. At the writing of this review, the second book in the new series, The Son of Neptune, had just been released (I'll be reading it soon!) Rick Riordan's novels based on Greek and Roman mythology are wonderful! They are full of adventure and surprises, and for anyone familiar with the mythology which is the basis for the stories, every new character you meet becomes a guessing game; because every villain in the books is based on a villain from the old myths. It was fun in this book to get to know a whole new batch of demigods; most of the characters from the previous books are absent, and even the ones that appear have smaller parts to play in this installment. I'd say that this book can stand on its own without requiring you to read the previous novels first, but a trip through the previous pentalogy (The Lightning Thief, The Sea of Monsters, The Titan's Curse, The Battle of the Labyrinth, The Last Olympian) will give you some backstory to help you appreciate what's going on a little better... some characters (Chiron, for example) are not developed in full in this book because the reader is presumably already acquainted with them from the previous series. And of course, you will have no idea how significant the absence of Percy Jackson himself is in this book unless you've read the previous books. But if you choose to start off with this book, the previous series should work well for you as "prequels" to this series, which promises to be even larger in scope than the original series. A year or so ago I enjoyed this story in book form; this time I listened to the audiobook, and I enjoyed it immensely both ways. For me, the second time through this book was quite a different experience, even taking format into account; I knew ahead of time what some of the "big reveals" were going to be (what Jason's purple shirt signifies, for example) so I could appreciate Riordan's craftsmanship in his foreshadowing of those events more than I could the first time. Worth a first, and then a second read!

This book compleatly inspired me. I liked the way it was writen and the message that it had to tell. There were stories about what they did that went wrong that were really funny and interesting. I also like the fact that it was about something that had gone right in the world. Rather than just harping about how things suck now. Cause we all know about how they suck. Well if you have your head out of the sand that is you do. How rair is it to hear about things going right however? To see how things could work?

Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie ISBN-13:9780316013680 Pub Sept 2007 by Little, Brown Books for Young Readers 240pp Theme: Rising to meet your potential. This book had me laughing out loud as Junior took the step to leave the rez and attend an all-white school to get a better education. The other Indians on the rez see him as a traitor. The students in his school think he is a freak. But Junior’s determination to leave the rez and make a better life for himself drive him to go against “nature” and claim the education he deserves. Junior has to learn the “rules” of his new life and adapt to his new school if he is going to make it. The language in this book is very strong and there are several instances of masturbation that would make this book difficult to teach. Having said that, the multi-cultural issues that are current in America today have extreme value in a classroom. This would be a fantastic book to teach tolerance and compassion to cultures different from your own.

accessible feminism! Please read this book which addresses everything from fat suits (the new black face) to peeing standing up. SO GOOD
Wil Wheaton's narration on this was awesome! What I think I liked best about this book is the way that I can see it being a great one to suggest to reluctant readers, young males, and video gamers. While I am not the first two of these and was only slightly the third in the early '90s, I still enjoyed the book. The action was intense. While some of the characters had less depth than one might hope, overall they worked for what the story needed. This was definitely a plot-driven tale, and although I was pretty sure I knew the eventual end, I still found myself intrigued and riveted at various points.
