This book has no right to be so absorbing. Though the topic of this forgotten book by Wallace Stegner reeks of self-indulgence-- A writer returns to where he grew up, reminisces about his youth and the history of the frontier town his transient childhood most identified as home and concludes with a 100-page fictionalized account of a the terrible winter of 1906-- he manages to tie his past inexorably to ours, linking his nostalgia for his youth with our own, and exploring the promise and inevitable waste of the American Dream lived out on our frontiers. Stegner, like Proust, experiences an "ancient, unbearable recognition" spurred by a return to the sites, sounds, and most importantly, smells of his childhood. He dreams of this period and is "haunted, on awakening, by a sense of meanings just withheld, and by a profound nostalgic melancholy." Everyone has some awareness of a deep meaning lurking in our past that has not, or cannot, be fully interpreted. Perhaps the best part of the book is section three, the novella length exposition on the hope and danger of the high plains that does a superb job of creating looming dread as the winter drops hard on the land. Near the end of section three, Stegner expounds on what it is to be an American pursuing the Dream: "How does one know what wilderness has meant to Americans unless he has shared the guilt of wastefully and ignorantly tampering with it in the name of progress? One who has lived the dream, the temporary fulfillment, and the disappointment has had the full course.... The vein of melancholy in the North American mind may be owing to many causes, but it is surely not weakened by the perception that the fulfillment of the American Dream means inevitably the death of the noble savagery and freedom of the wild. Any who has lived on a frontier knows the inescapable ambivalence of the old-fashioned American conscience, for he has first renewed himself in Eden and then set about converting it into the lamentable modern world."
This book has an interesting premise, zookeepers who assist Polish Jews escape the Warsaw ghetto, but is lacking in historical background information. Ackerman, a naturalist, tosses in lots of lyrical descriptions and often meanders away from what I considered the main story, namely the Polish people and their response to the devastation wreaked first by the Germans and then by the Soviets. She obviously did meticulous research, it shows when she seeks to recreate physical sensations (smells, touch) that the Zabinski family would have experienced. I expected and would have preferred a more linear presentation that included additional political and historical insight. I learned that the German were not only preoccupied with racial purity but also with “back-breeding” three extinct “Aryan” animals—aurochen, tarpans, and Europeam bison—that had historically thrived in an eastern section of Poland called Bialowieza. They looted the Warsaw Zoo and others for animals to use in the eugenic experiments and the descendants of these animals now live protected in the Bialowieza preserve near the Belorussian border. It is a World Heritage site. I liked biologist Lecomte du Nouy’s quote on page 92: “Germany’s crime is the greatest crime the world has ever known, because it is not on the scale of History: it is on the scale of evolution. Perhaps these are the types of insights that a naturalist is better able than a historian to relate.

Hilarious. Okay, to be honest, twice I have attempted to read, twice I have been enthralled by the language, the layered text and ingenuity of the footnotes--and twice I have put it down well before the end.

** spoiler alert ** This is a great story to read if you like historical fiction. It takes place during Henry II reign in England then follows along the line of his sons...Henry, Richard, Geoffrey, and John. The main character is the ever-loyal night William Marshall. You can't help but feel for him and cheer him on throughout the entire book. He experiences love from a distance while as a prisoner from a distance, but is able to physically lover Clara from up close later on in the novel. William fights through many tourneys and is the victor! He lives lavishly as the Young King Henry's right hand man. However, there are those that are jealous and seek to destroy him throughout the book. William is forever loyal, and has the ear of Queen Eleanor, which gets him out of binds time and time again. Eventually, William marries a beautiful, wealthy heiress (Isabella de Clare). They have three beautiful children. This book isn't all about fairy tale happiness, there is death too. The death of Henry II, the Young King Henry, William's brother John, and others. I highly recommend this book if you are interested in England's early history.
Erich Segal is a very detail writer. He must be doing a very good observation before he write the book. The plotting is also good.

In Small Town Siren, Abby returns to her small-town home to care for her ailing mother after a twenty year absence. Abby did not leave Willow Fork on the best terms. She had been run out of town after her high school boyfriend died in a car crash, and his mother placed all the blame on Abby, a girl from the wrong side of the tracks. While in town, Abby catches up with old friends, and meets new ones. She catches the eyes of two cowboys in particular, Sam and Jack. Sam and Jack are best friends who share everything and are looking for the perfect woman for them. Sam and Jack want Abby in their lives forever, they just have to convince her. Abby has the opportunity to have her dreams and her fantasies come true, but she must put aside her past and her fears, not an easy feat… There are so many adjectives to describe this book. Small Town Siren is sweet, sexy, erotic, and just plain fun to read. I really enjoyed reading this erotic menage book, the characters were diverse, but they all work well together. Sam and Jack have such different personalities. Sam is charming and outgoing while Jack is the practical, strong, and silent type. Their friendship is really sweet, and I just love those men. Abby is a great character as well, she is a little bit older than your average heroine (37) but, I enjoyed her story. I love how she is proud of who she is and the decisions she makes. This book is very erotic and there are plenty of hot sex scenes, however, the story is really sweet as well. The themes of overcoming past prejudices and being proud of who you are are prevalent throughout the book and make for a strong story. There is more to the book than sex, which I love, and the story is a very sweet, beautiful romance. There is much to love about Small Town Siren from the sexy cowboys, to the passionate love scenes, to the tender romantic moments. Erotica readers, I do recommend Small Town Siren, it is an all around good read.

Very touchy. Learn that the real world is not "a happy ending" story like most indonesian sinetron
Angela Clark, a British 26 year old woman experiences a horrible breakup and several mortifying moments then spontaneously decides to hop a flight across the Atlantic, to New York City. She lands without a plan but is quick to make new friends and experience some romance. Angela soon realizes that she has no idea what really makes her happy and must face some difficult decisions in order to fully embrace life. The characters are lovable and identifiable in a girly way. The plot was predictable and it ended as I expected but overall a cute and enjoyable read. I would recommend this book to friends who are going through confusing, boy caused dramas. I gave it 3 stars because while I enjoyed my time reading, once is good enough for me.
similar to paradise. crazy ladies.

An excellent survey of how science approached the study of sex in the past and the present. It is written in an engaging style with the author often participating in some of the studies, sometimes to a very funny end. There is also a wealth of knowledge about our bodies, their make-up, and our reactions to stimuli that I certainly was unaware of. Eye opening in many different ways.
