A history of the automobile, roadbuilding, and suburbanization in the US. Kunstler explains why pedestrian-unfriendly urban planning makes us feel bad and ruins our civic environment, among other things. This book clarifies the malaise that most of us feel but cannot always verbalize about ugly and alienating urban/suburban design. (Also see Home from Nowhere)

Where We Stand: Women Poets on Literary Tradition ed. by Sharon Bryan I bought this book for $.50 on the street. It was copywrighted in 1993. If I were a poetry teacher, it would be part of my course syllabus. I think that the discussion that these emminent poets have about our literary tradition, covering all viewpoints is inspiring and educational. While I certainly disagreed with some viewpoints, and while some of the entries were entirely too textbook for poets to be writing, as a female writer, I found it driving me to write and create on a daily basis.

I don't think I've given a book an A+ since Matthew Kneale's English Passengers. I had just finished Wicked and loved it, but then I read this one and it was one of those rare books where you miss it when it's away from you. I carried this book with me everywhere I went, cracking it over while riding elevators, waiting in line (for anything), and even while walking down the street. Though a fiction book, it's written about the real life of Mabel Stark, a tiger tamer during the heyday of the circus (first half of the 20th century). Despite this woman's unbelievable life and circumstances, you buy it, every word. She has an insight into people (especially men) which is refreshing, insightful, and always amusing. You cheer her on through her several marriages and tut tut through her even more numerous tiger-inducing injuries. Despite the multiple scary attacks from her striped beasts, you are swept up in her deep passion and understanding for these creatures (even if once in awhile you think she needs a reality check). This book was good from beginning to end and only had one part which was a bit too predictable (though still one of the most poignant moments in the book). I loved it. You'll enjoy it. Buy it, read it now!

I'm looking forward to reading another entry into the book world from the legendary Guy Kawasaki. If you don't know who this man is I invite to find out. Guy is what you might call a marketer, one of his many world class skills, but really he's so much more than that in so many ways. From his critical part in the iPad revolution, with Apple, to his own company his story is a case study in success and this book "Enchantment" tells how and why. You can find Guy anywhere and everywhere on the web, on Twitter and Facebook. His co. site has a great books section, something you may not have known, and he is also a widely respected author and one of the world's premier authorities on what we now call marketing. I call him Mr. Finesse because he is. More soon on this non-fiction entry from Guy Kawasaki!

Anne Nelson's book is wonderful - bridging important gaps. She tells more than the story of anti-Nazis living under Hitler (including a woman from Milwaukee). She gives a fresh, post-Cold War view of the petty bickering between dogmatists in the U.S. and U.S.S.R. She shows U.S. and Nazi life on the same page, a feat seldom accomplished elsewhere. And she shows the humanity of the rather ordinary people who stood up and said something, anything, rather than passively watching injustice from a safe distance. I found it gripping, and inspiring to take social action...and to live one's life for what matters.
I actually enjoyed the first few chapters that talked about the great health effects of a vegan diet. The personal stories of other people were quite compelling. However, the bulk of the book was filled with so many statistics and animal right stuff and was a turn-off for me. I kept reading, though, and was bale to find a few tokens in there worth hanging on to. This will not be my first recommendation of a book of this type, but it does have some good in it.
This book has stayed with me through the ages. Although I read it by choice in the summer, I know for many it was assigned reading at some point. Haunting and made me think.
How many people can say that their life was shaped by a documentary? Of those, how many can say that the documentary shaped them in not one, but three ways? Dr. Carl Sagan's award winning series introduced me to science, history and the history of science, and the music of Vangelis. I was only four or five when I first watched this show on PBS and it enthralled me. Today I'm a historian and one of my specialties is the history of science. I'm a new age musician and my musical compositions are heavily influenced by the work of Vangelis. And I'm an amateur astronomer with a passion for exo-solar planets, a subject Dr. Sagan speaks about frequently during the series. It remains a classic of scientific writing and a icon of documentary excellence.

This just did absolutely NOTHING for me Especially as the end to the trilogy. Things were brought into play, then barely developed. Characters either don't change at all or change completely. And the ending? Come on. What a deus ex machina. Dumb.
有趣,多彩的故事。
