Lamb chronicles Christ's missing years, from childhood to age 33. Here he's known as Joshua (from the Hebrew Yeshua), and the book is told from the point of view of Biff, Joshua's best friend, which has the distinction of making this novel read a lot like a buddy film. Biff loves Joshua and would do anything for him, and that's a good story no matter who you are. Moore is his usual irreverent self, but most of that is spent on Biff rather than Joshua. Perhaps the most profane thing he does in this novel is make Christ human. Human in that he was a child once, a young man with friends and fears and people who loved him because he was Joshua, just some dorky Jewish kid who had a crazy mother and a crush on Mary of Magdala and who just happened to be the son of God. The novel is based around the idea that it's the present day and God has brought Biff back from the dead to write a new Gospel for a sequel to the Bible. Moore dropped the ball on that one, as those scenes were the weakest parts of the story and were all but abandoned about halfway through. They only make a comeback at the end, showing up in time to cushion the pain of Joshua's death and make the book's ending anticlimactic and somewhat forced. Still, it's a successful book, serious and funny and loving. Moore's Joshua is an extremely sympathetic character. He gets confused and frustrated and makes mistakes, but he has faith, and he made me believe in him, or at least this version of him. Four stars for giving me a Christ I could relate to, a narrator I could laugh at, and a great story about two best friends on a biblical road trip, with ninjas! Would read again.

This was not a very good book. It had some good ideas but poor execution. The two main characters were annoying and didn't do anything to push the story; they pretty much stumbled though the events of the book while being pushed by the background players. I doubt I will be reading any of this authors other books. She never engaged me as a reader and a lot of her writting style I just didn't care for.

Having loved Angels and Demons and The DaVinci Code, I thought I'd give Brown's other books a try. Deception Point was mostly enjoyable except for the moments when it was glaringly obvious that Brown was trying to prove he'd done his research for the book. He's the art history conspiracy writer to most of the world, so when he went to write science, he used a lot of forced (and unnecessary) exposition to prove that he'd looked up facts in some very large books and perhaps even talked to a few experts. The plot is just as twisted and enjoyable as the "artsy" books, you just have to read around all of the "I did science-y research, I SWEAR!" parts.

I finally finished this. It's been sitting on my nightstand 1/2 read for too long. The characters are seemingly normal suburbanites charged with conflicts that plague them quietly under their veneer of 'normal'. Following their confusions about themselves is bearable for the first 250 pages, then the story plateaus. If you can make it through, the last 10 pages come out of nowhere giving the book a terribly surprise ending.

The reason this is one of my favorite books is 1. because it is sooo creative 2. it leaves room for interpretation and 3. the character Pi is just so lovable. The book is well-written and the way it addresses the topic of religion is very interesting and refreshing. I actually read this book first for school and had to present on it but it was an easy book to present on because it gives you so much to discuss. I would say that this book is perfect for a book club. And who wouldn't be interested in a kid who went to church on Sunday, Hindu temple on Thursday, and the mosque on Friday, and also btw his family is secular and owns a zoo! my favorite quote: "I know zoos are no longer in people's good graces. Religion faces the same problem. Certain illusions about freedom plague them both."

predictable clearly unreal presumptious a bestseller (same thing for any other dan brown book. they serve their purpose only when you are ona plane for 15 hours) at least it put me asleep. + the main character falls from a helicopter into a river and doesn't die... almost fantasy

While provocative and well written, I had a difficult time finding redeeming value in this tory. There is no meaning to life says a 13 year old boy--and from that point onward his classmates decide to create a heap of meaning to prove him wrong. Only they don't, or do they? At times violent, horrific, and always a bit shocking, this book probes an existential theme to a very dark degree. I can't say as I'd recommend it to many teens or adults, as I did not find too much redemption at the end of the story. Definitely thought-provoking, however!

I loved this book and have never read anything like it! Cedric does exactly what the description says: he physically flashes back to moments, times in his life but with the mind, knowledge, life he has lived as a 58 year-old man. An incredible novelist, Mark Lavorato seamlessly brings together different stories, perspectives, histories, and, with poetry, draws us right in to each character weaving through Cedric’s life. Could be complicated...but it isn’t – it is beautiful and it is beautifully written, set in a unique and exciting format. Must-read!
