I picked this up in a Library in Big Sur, expecting to learn about Bill Gates, and instead found it was about the history of the PC industry. A fascinating history, and still a very relevant read, even though the history stops at 1995. There have been just a few developments since then!

This is a really good book centered on the Poe and English family in a washed out mill town in Pennsylvania not far from Pittsburgh. This is a town devestated by the de-industrialization of America. The characters are compelling and the story is gripping. This is the first novel written by Phillip Meyer who dropped out of high school at 16 in Baltimore. He received his GED and worked as a construction worker, an EMT, and a derivatives trader before going to Cornell. He has been compared in glowing reviews to Steinbeck, Hemingway, and Cormac McCarthy. High praise indeed. Read this book.

I was planning on not reading this book for my book club this month and then I decided that I should at least read the first 1-2 chapters to say that "I tried it," and I'm so glad that I did! It's an amazing true story that the author lists as a novel since she wrote it about her grandmother's life and had to fill parts in. Lily, the main character, was a fabulous woman born way before her time and is such an inspiration! However, she did not live her life as if she had very many obstacles in front of her. If she wanted to do it, she did it. If something needed taken care of, she did it. If a plan was needed, she came up with it. She was unbelievably smart. She was truly an amazing, tough "broad" that did more in a month of her life than I will accomplish in my whole life! At 15 she got on a horse by herself, had a gun with her, and rode 500 miles away from home, through the desert, to become a teacher in a one room schoolhouse with no books. The trip took her a month and that's just one example of the many, many things she did in her lifetime during a time when women were only allowed to be nurses, teachers, or nuns (as she says many times throughout the book). I definitely judged this book by it's cover, but I'm so glad I picked it up and gave it a chance. It's a very fast read - a great rainy day book that can be read in a day or two.

It was a cute story but it took a while to get there. I find extolling the value of words and books sometimes a little dull if it isn't in context. Kids know they're SUPPOSED to love words and reading, but why is more interesting. In that respect, the ending is vague, because the song that cheers the princess up isn't that remarkable.

disgusting hatchet job
This is a very well written book about a dead girl. Written in her voice, a true literary coup, Siebald's book was about crime and its effects. Like her incredible memoir Lucky, The Lovely Bones is about the after effect of crime, the sense of things left undone and unfinished. I loved this book more the second time around.

Cleo's husband Gav has decided to storm out of the house after Cleo decides she will attend a reunion he is adamant she not attend, all because he fears she will hook up with an old boyfriend she hasn't seen in 7 years. He ends the marriage instead of being sensible. Cleo goes out looking for her sister Liza, ends up getting drunk in the club, meets Justin, and ends up spending the night with him. They don't use protection and it slips Cleo's mind when she and Gav get back together. But what about Justin and Cleo's possible pregnancy? The book was very good at capturing the reader's attention. I just wish the breaks between characters could have been better. It may have been due to the fact I read it on a kindle, but usually page breaks or something is there to differentiate a jump in character or location. Even though it wasn't tough to figure out a change in scene had occurred, I thoroughly enjoyed the story and book. It was interesting to see how the relationships changed among everyone in the book.
This book may be unmatched as a touching and historically accurate novel, but it takes a truly dedicated reader to finish the book and retain all of the information within its pages. The book tries to be as accurate as possible, and it succeeds, but it presents itself in a very cumbersome manner. A great amount of the book is spent introducing seemingly random and irrelevant tangents about certain people that the reader may never hear from again. There is also a painfully awkward jumble of foreign words thrown into the novel. I find it difficult to read if I have to flip to the end every two sentences to understand what the author is talking about. Perhaps I'm just ignorant, but I believe that the book could communicate its message and story in a more effective manner without all of its obsessively specific historical snapshots.
