This book was AMAZING!! It was a page-turner for me because once i started to read it I could not put it down! Although, to me it seemed to be written for younger kids. It was a fast read for me. But I loved the whole thing! Max is a kick-a** kind of girl. She's really the type of character I like in books.

If I could only take 10 books with me to a deserted island, this would be one. Sort of "Anne Frank" for adults, it is the journals of a young Dutch Jew caught up in the Holocaust. She is brilliant and outgoing and living life to the full, when Hitler's ugly shadow begins to fall over her world. The struggles and dramas that ensue highlight the development of her soul into a loving and courageous being, who was able to write, even as the net drew tighter around her: "I know that those who hate have good reason to do so. But why should we always have to choose the cheapest and easiest way? It has been brought home forcibly to me here how every atom of hatred added to the world makes it an even more inhospitable place. And I believe, childishly perhaps but stubbornly, that the earth will become habitable again only through the love that the Jew Paul described to the citzens of Corinth in the thirteenth chapter of his first letter." We need this kind of thinking and living as much in our 21st century world as they needed it in Europe in 1942.

I loved the twist ending.
Xtabentun, A Novel of Yucatan is an enjoyable quick read, if you can ignore grammatical errors (some sentences have to be read twice to catch the meaning). The author Rosy, Hugener, sprinkles in enough Mayan folklore to peak the reader’s interest. Some of the descriptions are creative. The story line is believable and it draws the reader into the book. Mexico’s turbulent history and the struggle of its indigenous peoples are presented in a palatable way. All in all it is a good book.

It's an interesting autobiography but I was really disappointed in how the book was concluded. I felt like it lacked closure from the standpoint of not know how this woman's childhood really affected her adulthood and some of the decision she would have made based on her experiences.
insight into immigrant communities and their progeny. Making your way in the 'new country', how your kids fare. Old age and virility. Being taken advantage of. Trying to 'help' your parents, help themselves. So many different angles.

The longest book of the series, it is also the most tedious, especially when reading it to children. There is a lot of content in this book, maybe more than their needs to be. While I loved every subplot Rowling created, there are a few that could have been left out and still maintained the essence of the story. Nonetheless, this, as with every other HP story, is a page turner. It also contains a lot of pertinent information that will appear again in the last two books. Pay attention, take your time, and enjoy. [Originally read book for the first time in July of 2009]
Probably the best plot-driven book I've ever read. Twain said that he never planned out Tom's adventures; he just let Tom get into trouble and worked on trying to get him back out of it.
