My first Inspirational Fiction attempt. This author was recommended and he did not disappoint. Good story line with excellent character development and satisfying end. Read for book group - the others were not so lucky in their picks :(

This book is what it is. A personal account of a former slave about the atrocities that she survived. I only gave it 3 stars as it was extremely short and had loads and loads of supplements that were actually boring (letters between Prince's lawyer and her former owner trying to gain her freedom in Antingua whilst remaining in the safety of England). The idea of the extra stuff is interesting, but makes for quite dry reading, especially as it's meant to convince the general public of why we should believe Prince's account and be anti-slavery. All well and good for the time in which it was written, but a bit out-of-date now of course! Am glad I read it though as I didn't know anything about what it was like to be West Indies slave. It seems her accounts were so much more horrific than those suffered by American South slaves, but I have as yet to read Uncle Tom's Cabin, so once I do it will be an interesting comparison for sure!

See my review for An Assembly Such as This for an overall review. These Three Remain is my favorite book in the trilogy because it shows Darcy's "courting" of Lizzy as well as his anguish at her refusalof his proposal and ultimately his transformation into the gentleman he wanted to be thanks to Lizzy's list of his faults. One of my favorite books of all time.

Not quite as good as "The Highly Selective Thesaurus..." but it does reference words that even those of us who don't always look up the word egregious can appreciate.
I'm not sure what it says about me that novels aimed at teenagers seem to have been some of my favorite over the last two years. This is a well-written, intriguing story of a teen named Andi struggling to cope with her younger brother's tragic death and her family's subesequent demise. A school project and a trip to Paris introduce Andi to a teenager who lived in the days of the French revolution. The book interwines Andi's story with Alex's own words from her diary (as well as Andi's father's study to determine whether a small preserved heart found in a jar is that of the son of beheaded monarch Marie Antoinette). About 2/3 of the way through, a plot twist takes place that isn't exactly unexpected but still made me realize this is ultimately not a book aimed at my demographic. All the same, it's a great read that can be enjoyed by adults and teens alike.

Tortilla Curtain gives a human face to an issue that all too often is cast in its extremes. Talk show hosts rail against 'illegals' taking over our country and our jobs; the other side demonizes the government and equates their handling of Mexicans the way that Hitler handled the Jews. In the end, both sides make us want to plug our ears. Illegal immigration, what should be done, how we should think about, is far more complex and nuanced than that. So it refreshing to see T.C. Boyle tries to capture the humanity of the migrant workers we all too readily cast out of our conscious as below us. Some will argue that his treatment of America, the ironically named wife, of is overly sympathetic, and at times bordering on bathos. Yes, Boyle may cross the line a few times, but as a novelist drawing on the dramatic, he has some license to thrust the couple into unlikely situations, and to make them. I did have a little problem with the way he drew the two white characters (who like the Mexican couple, Boyle allows the reader to inhabit their psyche.) As the cliche odious yuppies they weren't that believable. The wife esp., an alpha-alpha female bent on beating the crap out of anything that got in her way, seemed only a prop for Boyle with which to contrast the noble suffering of the abject, soul-shattered Mexican couple. Read: bad shallow whites vs. simple, yet virtuous immigrants. Still, those minor quibbles aside, I would recommend this book, esp. for reading groups or college (maybe even mature high school)lit classes. The writing is exquisite, truly the work of a master (Boyle is able to take an accident scene and infuse it with so much tension and momentum that his way with words, phrases, and paragraphs is nearly.) Ultimately, I would like to see Tortilla Curtain as part of the sociology/ethnic literature canon as I have come across few works that capture the ethnic tinderbox that our country so complacently and precariously rests on.

I think it's interesting that Vail Christian HIgh School reads this book - that's where I got the suggestion from. Good book with an interesting group of characters, but I hated the ending - it seemed like the author got bored and quit.
