Black Sisters Street is Zwartezusterstraat, in the middle of Belgium's red-light district, home to four African women who have left their homeland in the naïve hope of betterment. The story begins when one of the women, Sisi, is found murdered. As her remaining co-workers and house mates, Ama, Efe and Joyce come to terms with her death, each relives their painful journey from Nigeria to Belgium to become sex workers, and how they have been brought together by Dele, a Nigerian pimp, and by "the trump card that God has wedged in between their legs". Unigwe's prose is clear and calm - although some terrible things take place in the book, the reader doesn't feel weighed down by it. Unigwe is also skilled at introducing into the narrative issues that are typical to Nigerian society like polygamy, sexism, belief in superstitions, tribal divisions and so on, using just a single reference or a passing comment, leaving the reader with a fleeting but precious sort of cultural snapshot. I won an advanced copy of this book on Goodreads First Reads giveaways and highly recommend it, but be warned: this novel leaves a strong aftertaste.

El escritor americano Bret Easton Ellis (Los Angeles, 1964) publica 'Lunar Park', en donde el autor americano arremete contra su propia biografía. Una mezcla de realidad y ficción, donde se confunde la vorágine de la vida de autodestrucción de un autor de éxito que reconduce a la vida familiar, con una serie de asesinatos y desapariciones en una atmósfera fantasmal. Lunar Park es una buena novela de terror, recomendable incluso para lectores que no sientan particular interés por las andanzas personales del autor de American Psycho. De hecho es mucho más agradable leer la novela sin preguntarse todo el tiempo qué partes son reales y cuáles inventadas, simplemente disfrutando de la historia y los personajes. El problema es que en seguida nos tropezamos con el fantasma de Patrick Bateman, y para todos los que hemos leído American Psycho se trata de un reencuentro irresistible, un poderoso atractivo que amenaza con fagocitar todo el interés de la novela. A través de la metáfora de los monstruos, las casas encantadas y los fantasmas del pasado, Lunar Park habla sobre la relación de padres e hijos. El propio Ellis ha confesado que su deseo de escribir una novela de terror pura (él siempre consideró American Psycho una comedia oscura) proviene de su admiración por Stephen King, y es inevitable establecer un par de conexiones con la obra del autor de Maine: El Resplandor también abordaba el conflicto de padres e hijos, con fantasmas y casas encantadas; y por otra parte, La Mitad Oscura contaba la historia de un autor que tenía que enfrentarse con un asesino de su propia creación (en aquel caso era un alter ego, un pseudónimo encarnado). Pero en conclusión, Bret Easton Ellis es un autor con personalidad y recursos, una voz propia que merece ser escuchada también cuando se adentra por terrenos que no le son tan naturales como en el caso del terror de Lunar Park.

Usually with Eggers' work I become engulfed in the story immediately. Some of these stories eddied around characters so brilliantly clear and so "hungry" that it was easy to become swept up with the story and feel genuine disappointment at their abrupt endings. There were times when I considered rereading a story just to understand why and how it captured me so quickly. Admittedly, not every story had such a pull on me but there were enough that I enjoyed this collection overall. Also of note, Eggers occasionally uses amusing writing tricks which, although they may or may not save a story, bring you closer to the author and create an entirely novel reading experience.

Stranger isn't Heinlein's best, but it's better than most of the books you're likely to read in your lifetime. It chronicles the life and struggles of Valentine Michael Smith, the only human born on another world - Mars in this case. As is pointed out early, Michael isn't really human. Genetically, of course, he's a man, but he was raised on Mars by Martians after being orphaned. His whole idealogy and personality centers around this. A young adult Michael is "rescued" and returned to Earth, where he is befriended by a lecherous old millionare, Jubal Harshaw, and begins to learn about being a man. His startling naïveté is endearing, but Micheal is no fool. He has a variety of abilities apparently common to Martians in general, from the ability to precisely control his body functions such as heart rate and breathing, to what appear to be psychic powers. He can even "turn" an object 90 degrees to everything, removing it from this universe entirely. He's baffled by Humanity, confused by concepts we take for granted, including religion and sex. I won't spoil the plot entirely (since you do plan on reading it, right?), but Michael does eventually adapt to human customs, and even starts his own church. The latter half of the book is a both spiritual and poignant exploration of what it is to be an outsider as well as a human. Grok it in fullness; should you read with an open heart, you will be changed. A lot of people will like this book because of the openly sexual nature of much of the story. In truth, all of that is nearly irrelevant. That's just how Heinlein is. If you read and enjoyed The Cat Who Walks Through Walls, you'll be at home here, and enjoy the book despite the gratuitous use of sex to get attention. As a final word...just read it. You'll thank me later. This isn't quite the grandmaster at his best, but it's not far from it.

a book-loving neighbor sent this thriller over for me to try. it was the first time I'd read - or possibly even heard of - DeMille's novels. but now I'm hooked. loved watching the conspiracy slowly come to light and getting to know the strong characters along the way.
