I am sure when I read this back in the 80s I thought it was the best thing ever. As I have discovered going back to re-read some of Lindsey's books, I just can't connect with them any more. Perhaps because I'm older? Reading these books at 16 or 17 when the heroine is so young probably made more sense than late 30 something me reading these and thinking, god, what idiots most 20 year olds are. (Myself included at that age.) Mostly, she lost me this time when there was SO MUCH TELLING about how great the heroine was and the hero changed his tune so quickly about women I got whiplash.

I have read this book multiple times. It was the first book in the Vorkosigan series that I read. I have since read them all and now realize that this is probably the most awkward entry point I could have chosen for the series. This would explain my original 3 star rating, which I have now changed to 5. This last reading was an audio book. I think this is a great way to re-read this book, but might not be the best as a first reading because of the many Vor based names in this book. (might be hard to keep track) Full of fun and twisty intrigue.

I believe I would have liked hanging out with this lovely woman. She made Bogie sound like a jolly good fellow too.

This book was a great start and interesting, but then went off a bit in the middle! i found it hard to connect with the characters, but I am glad I persevered as it was a good book by the end.

This book shows the development of Ravirn into Raven. But the next books should show how Raven fits into his new persona.

2 students or 2 groups of students can read the poems at the same time (different lines for each that come together beautifully). Nice for building fluency and to just enjoy poems instead of analyzing them to death (which I'm wont to do anyway).

I have to give the translator props here, because these do not read like translated works. I never would have guessed that they weren't originally written in English. Okay, I give the series as a whole four stars, but if I were rating them separately, it'd be like this: Inkheart: 3 stars Fun young people's fantasy. Good concept. Some good characters, particularly Dustfinger, but Mo, Fenoglio, and Elinor are also swell. Entertaining. Certainly good enough to get me to pick up the sequel, but not exceptional. Inkspell: 5 stars I was surprised at how much more I liked Inkspell. Better villains. The characters fleshed out; Dustfinger joined the ranks of The Truly Great Characters for me. The story deepened. I found myself thinking philosophical thoughts about God and free agency and such. Also, I didn't want to put it down. Inkdeath: 4 stars Couldn't go to bed last night until I finished. (I'm trying not to reveal anything you wouldn't be expecting, but skip the rest of this paragraph if you want to be sure that I give nothing away.) Mo gets his Robin Hood on, and I like his struggle with finding himself. Dustfinger takes his awesome otherworldliness to a new level a la Gandalf, and his endearing tortured...weakness?...it's the right amount of gone. There are a lot of Dead? No! moments, but I never thought it got old. As for the trilogy as a whole, I very much like the parent/child relationships and the love stories of Mo/Resa and Dustfinger/Roxane. Meggie's romantic forays certainly aren't strong points of the books, but I think they work out right. As for the ending, I was satisfied. Stuff tied up nicely. I went to bed after finishing this happy and full of thoughts of blue fairies, castles, heroes and such. What can I say? I'm a sucker for this kind of adventure story. By the way, there is a recap of Inkheart and Inkspell in the beginning and an index of characters in the back of Inkdeath, which is convenient if, like me, it's been a couple of years since you read Inkspell. Careful with the character guide though, as it does give a few things away.

I really loved this book. It combined my two great loves: French and art along with 19th century history and a very focused subject: Americans in Paris. I learned much about how Paris was not only the center for fine arts but medicine during the early 1800's and how people like Oliver Wendell Holmes and Samuel Morse came to Paris for different reasons (medicine and art respectively) and ended up being famous for different accomplishments. The reason being (and I think McCullough's major point) is that Paris is a city that inspires people to greatness. I always tell my art students that if an artist wanted to "make it", he/she had to have their work displayed at the famous Salon. The section on the Paris Commune was also quite fascinating and the heroism of Elihu Washburn - American diplomat in France- was notable.

It made me laugh..it made me cry..i think i loved it so much as it seemed so real...not like some books you read that really are fairytales...does not happen in real life, I found it really easy to relate to the characters...this book will be one of my favourites for a long time to come!
