I've already read this book. Several times actually. It's one of my favorites and I just felt like I needed to read it again.
Sam decides to run away to Alaska because his mother won't let him wear plastic fangs in the house. Everyone in the neighborhood conspires to change his mind. I don't know why, but this book wasn't as fun as the previous books about Sam. He seemed less like a precocious genius and more like an ordinary little boy. I suppose as Sam grows up, he'll continue to be even less remarkable.

If you're into this genre of "The History of Everyday Things", then you may find some of the background knowledge presented here tired and repetetive, but if you're new to the genre, then it's a good starting point. I found the chapters on Coke, and Tea the best, but wished the author had gone more in depth on the subject of the short epilogue, Water.

This book is very iinteresting in that people tend to have an extreme view on it. Im always surprised by the strong emotions it evokes. I have been very disappointed by some of the misleading and out of context quotes in reviews of some leaders. I almost didn't read this book years ago due to the controversy. I picked it up on a book shelf at my gym and read the first chapter and was hooked. I've reread it a couple times and will read it many more. Velvet Elvis was instrumental in helping me work through some spiritual wrestling and learning to be comfortable with spiritual tension.
This book tells you the life story of Jabez and the hardships he went through. How with all that, he kept seeking God!

This book is beautifully written, and the glimpses into Kashmir are interesting, but I kept being disturbed by the gender politics--colonialism as played out on the female body or through female desire. Not sure how I feel about it still.
After reading Herge’s best Tintin album, Tintin in Tibet, The Castafiore Emerald feels like a letdown. It still has Herge’s signature clear line, and it does have complicated plot, setting it in Marlinspike for the entire story feels pedestrian. I prefer my Tintin globetrotting. But this would have worked better have a read it as part of the 3 album volumes I was buying before reading my first oversized album.

Such a great historical fiction book set in Seattle, World War II. I really loved the characters and the story.
Just couldn't get into this - the writing felt forced.
