This book was very good and very sad. My sister gave it to me to read. Enough said.

The Known World incorporates much of my favorite fodder for reading material: the South and its history, the complicated gender and race relations that issued from slavery, a splendid Cormac McCarthyesque detour into Texas and savory prose that makes the reader careful to register each word. Before I read this book, reviews that described its pace as "plodding" mildly dampened my enthusiasm. My concerns were quickly put to rest--the pace serves an extremely effective purpose that reflects storytelling in all its asides and tangents, that emulates the pace of real life, and that picks up the pieces of a fragmented historical record and imbues it with the life and emotion of an impressive cast of characters. The main protagonists are a place and an era whose time is past, but whose legacy continues to permeate the landscape for the decades that follow. Much like this tale will haunt the reader long after the final page is read.

The voice of the novel was captivating and innocent, yet filled with deep significant statements about life. The author creates comparisons between an absurd situation of a tiger and boy both living on a lifeboat to life and religion. The novel completely blew me away when I turned the last page and saw the intense statement that the book made. Definitely a must read.
How I love David Grossman. Just at the start, already enmeshed.
The characters are easy to get into. The style is cute, simple and funny. The main of the main characters for the series are introduced all in the 1st volume and are very likable. All in all, the series takes many twists and turns while keeping a very enjoyable plot. One moment you're laughing, the next you could be crying.

Banham's writing is very lucid and enthusiastic, but he takes more of a contrarian approach than Pevsner. Good secondary source material if you're looking for another perspective on John Ruskin et. al.

Transforming Prayer by Daniel Henderson is a must read for anyone looking to revolutionize their prayer life. Henderson is a senior pastor and has been putting on worship prayer conferences around the country for years Now he takes the wisdom he has learned from these workshops and his own study and puts it in this book to help readers develop their own prayer life. The book is filled with testimonials from several people who have attended the conferences and have had their lives, both prayer life and whole life, transformed. Henderson uses Scripture and Jesus' own instructions in the Lord's Prayer to get to the nitty-gritty of prayer. He convicts readers (me included) of often praying a "grocery list" of prayers, just checking off a list and using prayer to seek God's hand to fix things for us, rather than seeking His face, which should be the true focus of prayer. He offers a four-step guide to prayer using a music conductor as a guide. Here are some terrific quotes from the book: We attempt to use prayer to get our will done in heaven rather than His will done on earth. Asking [in prayer] is the doorway...to discovering the profound joy of a transformed life. What motivates us to ask can often be all over the map. What motivates our Father to answer is that He would be glorified in our prayers through the person and work of His Son, Jesus Christ. This is an excellent book for anyone looking to transform their prayer life by seeking His face, and not His hand.

I wish I had liked this more, but it took more than a year to finish and I found it very dense and obscure.

This graphic novel is so dark it's almost black. Literally! Other than the word balloons and the few scenes that take place in the daylight, the pages are either black or gray. The story itself is quite dark also: an American detective investigating the murders of several factory girls in Mexico. I wasn't very impressed with either the story or the art, but then again, I read this right before going to bed. Maybe I'll give it another shot, maybe not.
