I remember reading this in high school and not being nearly as moved by it as I was this time around. Its simplicity makes it the perfect canvas for the topics it covers, mainly of basic human drives - greed, amibition, war, aging - and exactly what makes it such a timeless and enduring story. I hope it's assigned reading for my kids someday so I'll have an excuse to give it another read.

harmless tween fare. Fascinating when I was a young teen. Lightweight now that I'm older.

One of two Spenser for Hire books we picked up from a book sale. Jeremy read this one out loud. It was funny. No time was wasted getting into the action. Robert B. Parker, I would say from this book alone, seems to be an efficient writer. He's not wasting words. He entertainingly communicates his point without wasting your time. And though I have never seen an episode of the TV show, I'm sure they nailed it when they cast Robert Urich.

Along the same lines as TV show "Lost", this has a lot of eerie stranded island feel with weird things going on. It'd be great for teens (or adults) who love the show.

A beautifully written and accessible history of not just the dead white guys and gals of the English Isles. Schama has had some criticism because he made a deal with the devil (ie. the BBC and the History Channel) and these histories were made into high quality historical television. This book may not offer the most stringent critique of British history (though, it is not bad ... not bad at all) but it does tell a wonderful story and manages to elevate the discussion out of total myth, all-the-while managing to keep the history accessible and meaningful. I personally can't wait to read the next two volumes (and see the BBC broadcast)!

Easy read. Beautifully written in the voice of black help in the 60's. Stockett did an amazing job!

Another favorite from the lighthearted hand of de Botton. Although he makes some broad generalizations, I found it a warm thoughtful & relevant read.

I started this on tape but left town and found it on the shelf at my son's house so finished it in print. I didn't love it but it kept me entertained while I was up late at night trying to adjust to the time change.
Where do I start? Lexi's mom died of a drug overdose. However, Lexi has been in and out of foster homes, each time her mom thinks she can stay off of drugs. When her mom passes, Lexi thinks she has no family, but finds out she has a great Aunt Eva, her grandmother's sister still alive in Washington. Starting a new high school freshman year, Lexi is used to being the new girl and finds comfort and friendship in the books she reads, especially her dog earred copy of Jane Eyre. So at lunch she takes her book and looks for a spot outside. However, she sees a girl sitting by herself reading as well. So she introduces herself to a girl named Mia and they quickly become friends. During her first day, she runs into Mia's twin, Zach. She doesn't know at the time they are twins however. Zach is the popular, all American type of boy. Quickly Lexi becomes Mia's best friend and is like one of the Farraday family. One night when they all have been drinking Lexi accidentally tries to kiss Zach, which leads to a whole new set of problems. Later when she finds out Zach has liked her all along too, what will happen if Lexi and Zach decide to become a couple to her and Mia's friendship? The story moves along and we come to a sad day for everyone when Mia is killed to due all of their choices, but only Lexi seems to be the one paying for the mistakes. What the book is about is choices and consequences and how we move on. Beautiful beautiful story, one that will stay in your mind and have you recommending to everyone. Kristin Hannah really knows how to craft a story, one that is real and can happen. I couldn't recommend this book enough!
