I just heard that they are making these books into a television series. I love Alexander McCall Smith's quaint setting and the whimsical yet serious manner in which he deals with all of our lady detective's investigations. Very enjoyable series!

Right from the beginning when Hollus, an alien, meets Tom in his office I was hooked on the story. Their friendship was just one of the many enjoyable things about Calculating God. Sawyer deftly wove threads of family, friendship, science and religion into a very good story. Unfortunately, in the end the clear, flowing story falters to a rough, uneven finish. However, there is easily enough good to create a very nice book--3.5 stars.

Very interesting ideas about how we make sense out of all the competing stimuli--how we construct memory and a picture of ourselves. Ostensibly the novel is about a writer who teams up with a computer engineer to build/teach a computer to pass the Turin Test; answer the questions from a masters comprehensive exam indistinguishably from a human answerer. Teaching a computer to read shows the main character how little he understands about knowing.
