A love story with a twist.

Horne writes a brilliant history of Algeria's struggle for independence. His well-documented research records how France tried to hold on to its empire, and how its traditions and institutions were betrayed by ideology and evil. More ominous are the telling parallels between this war and the current situation in the Middle East -- mutato nomine: change the names of "France" and "Algeria" to "United States" and "Iraq," and Horne's work could have been written yesterday.

This is book 2 in the series. Love between a LW/WM and they are great together.

brooks doesnt just "make the ordinary extraordinary" - she demonstrates the beauty of the every-day, as well as the humor. and sometimes the ugliness.
A good story with interesting structure. I haven't read any other Vargas Llosa yet, but I get the sense that it is not his best. I feel like the profile of Flora Tristan is a bit forced compared to his depiction of Paul Gauguin, like he doesn't really understand the female mind in the same way he intuitively understands men. May try Feast of the Goat one of these days.

If you haven't read anything by Carl Hiaasen, come see what all the fuss is about. I'm a huge devotee, and "Native Tongue" is part of the reason. The story takes place at an animal theme park in Florida. As in all Hiaasen books, characters include thugs, ecoterrorists and all-round good guys. Hiaasen is a master of crafting a seemingly lighthearted tale with a strong message underneath. Read a Hiaasen book once a year--it's good for what ails you. And you might even be able to stop taking anti-depressants or self-medicating with food. Other favorites of mine: "Stormy Weather," "Skin Tight" and "Skinny Dip."

Disturbing, but all good children's books are a little twisted - the art in this book is so rich, you can almost taste the colors.

Definitely more sci-fi/fantasy than fairy tale. Definitely too long. A bit hard to get into because the author spends so much time withholding information from the reader, but not to any great suspense. Also because the characters aren't very likeable, so it's hard to invest in them. Probably the only reason I finished it was because I hate not finishing books.

I loved the history of the gardens, and the photos, paintings, and other graphics are great illustrations. It is like reading a cookbook and never trying the recipes -- so easy to appreciate even if you never try it yourself!
** spoiler alert ** I read this book in a day and a half. It's a quick read but there's just something about the style of writing that the author has that just doesn't create a connection with the characters for me. I honestly found the characters annoying and whiney and the ending was awful. This is a teen novel and yet the ending leads us to believe that Bianca cares so little about her parents that she's not even going to go back and see how they came out in the fire at her school but she's just so in love with this boy that she's willing to leave her entire life behind to live his tragic life. I don't see how in the world that she will even be able to eat the way she needs to without being detected by this organization that hates vampires since they live in tight quarters and are on "lockdown" for weeks maybe months. I mean the ending was just stupid. I don't think I would suggest these to another teenage girl and definitely not to any serious readers. Someone that wants something light and not well put together might enjoy the quickness and ease of this story.

Book three of the excellent Inspector Chen series. This time stalwart, loyal, grumpy, crapped-on Detective Yu takes a prominent role, beginning the book being, yes, crapped on. Chen finds himself on vacation working for a big time business man and in a position to help others. Not my favorite of the three Chen novels I've read, but still OK. The resolution just seemed to come out as, oh yeah, here's who did it. The window on China as it develops is more interesting to me than the mystery part of the book. These earlier novels give me an insight into China as it changed in the 90s, when China was still a big force but somehow hadn't solidified in the mainstream news and culture.
