I was unhappy with this book. I read such good reviews for it but I couldnt get past chapter four myself. The characters were aweful to me. It was very well written but I just was not impressed at all.
David McCullough is one of my favorite authors. He does a nice job of making history appealing by "developing" the human-side of the story. This book told the story of the soldiers in the trenches as well as focusing on Washington. This is the second book this I've read this year that had Washington as a focus (I also read "His Excellency: George Washington" by Joseph Ellis). In both books Washington is humanized, he's such a legendary figure in our history, separating the man and the myth gets difficult. It's enlightening, for me anyway, to see such a great leader struggle with making decisions and to see that many of his decisions were questioned (his second-in-command essentially undermines Washington). We sometimes assume great leaders always know the right decision to make and that someone as respected as Washington would never be questioned. 1776 also highlighted how tenuous the American position was throughout the year, there are several times that the British could have wiped Washington and the troops out, but for various reasons it didn't happen. Still I couldn't help feeling this book could have been more, I particularly was hoping more would have been written about the writing of the Declaration of Independence. Overall the book makes for a good read for even someone with only a casual interest in history; it's fairly short (when you take away the notes and bibliography, it checks in at under 300 pages), informative (we should probably all know more about the founding of our nation),and the focus on major and the "common man" makes it interesting.
an intriguing story of a woman discovering herself and interesting to read it in this format of a graphic novel...

Gabaldon's fantasy takes one from the 20th to the 18th century with a WW2 nurse, Claire Randall. She gets trapped there and married to a Scotsman, Jamie Fraser. Jamie and Claire have many rollicking adventures through the next 5 Gabaldon novels: Dragonfly in Amber, Voyager,Drums of Autumn, Fiery Cross, and A Breath Of Snow and Ashes. Two more books are expected in the series. The characters come to life so real that you expect to meet them daily and the books are addictive and full of the author's rich knowledge of plant biology and history (she is a Ph.D in both subjects and was a professor before the Outlander book became a runaway best seller). Despite the romance these books are history, biology, politics, drama, war, peace, relationships and FUN...what a ride!

Mark is a 24 years old architect, cute and adorable, and virgin. He has had a loving family even though a bit old: in fact he was raised by his grandparantes and they accepted his omosexuality, but lived in a small cabin among a forest, so it was a little difficult for Mark to find a lover. So now, he lives in the city but he is still shy and wary when it is time to love. But one morning, during a brief vacation in his cabin, he meet a camper, Joe: big, muscular and very handsome, Joe is also very open in his interest for Mark. But he has also a gold ring on his hand, so someone is waiting him back home. But destiny decided for them, and Joe is lightly injured and loses part of his memory: he remembers to have someone at home, but he doesn't remember whom, and what is their relationship. And now he has near Mark, and Mark is so innocent and exciting... Mark is a lovely character, all blush and eyes. He is naivee and open, charmingly innocent. Joe is more mature and aware, he perspire sex, and to Mark's innocent eyes he is like a feast on two legs... This is a tender story with no much drama or conflict. Funny and enjoyable, maybe a fault I can find is the pink world in which our characters live, where omosexuality is accepted without problems and where a man can live in peace between his family warm embrace... it's an ideal world and sometimes is relaxing to read about it. http://elisa-rolle.livejournal.com/11...

I love to hate Anthony Bourdain.
** spoiler alert ** Captivating, intriguing and unique true story that reads like an urban legend. A Garden ENCLOSED is a true short story about Marlena McBride, a lady who existed for a short time and then seemed to disappear without a trace, under some very unusual circumstances. Marlena McBride had contact with other people and lived in a quaint home where she tended her beautiful garden. Before purchasing her home she had gone to college, was known by many in her community, had a floral boutique, and even practiced law. Later in her life Marlena had moved back to her home town. The sudden death of her father came only a few short weeks after her mother had passed. McBride never did have a close relationship with her parents, especially her father, although she loved them dearly. Her only remaining family now, her brother, seemed to be her only close connection. One day after an invite from an acquaintance, she decided to attend a dance where she met a man named Michael Engels. Marlena immediately seemed to connect with Michael and they soon became very close friends and even fell in love. A few months later Michael became ill and was admitted to the hospital with heart complications. On her way to see Michael the day he was admitted, Marlena stopped at a diner for a cup of coffee where she had a very strange experience. While there she met a teenage run-away who seemed to be in great distress. After speaking with, and comforting the girl, McBride seemed to lose track of time. When taking notice, it was three hours later. Marlena was on her way to drop the teen off at her home first, then head to the hospital. As Marlena was pulling out of the diner parking lot her car seemed to act strangely. Another vehicle headed in their direction ended up colliding with Marlena. This car belonged to a man who was on his way home, slightly distraught after having just lost his job. Strange things happened during and after this accident. The man who hit Marlena's vehicle reported the incident as two women in a white vehicle pulling out from a white diner parking area onto the road. However, this diner no longer existed as it had burned down some 15 years earlier. I had to go back to re-read this book a second time, as I was somewhat confused. It seemed Marlena's body was never found, however, two bodies were found at the scene of the accident. Although the woman resembled Marlena, her brother failed to identify her as his sister, due to a birthmark Marlena had behind her ear which this body did not. Also the blood type of this dead body was not a match to Marlena's. What is even stranger is that Michael, the love of her life, died in the hospital at the same exact time as Marlena's accident. Posthumous memorial services were held for the body thought to be of Marlena and the gravestone was marked unknown, died 2010. Strangely at that same cemetery there is another gravestone with the very same name, Marlena McBride. However the gravestone reads Marlena McBride born and died December 1952. Was Marlena from another dimension? Was she an angel? To this day no one knows what happened to this lady. This is the strangest story I have ever come across. I found this story very interesting and intriguing, yet it left me in limbo. If the author Cluke, had only shared a little more detail about the other witness, about what happened after the accident, or even what happened to Marlena's home after her death, it would have given more credibility to the story. Maybe this was done by Cluke on purpose, maybe not. If not, my only hope is that he may dig a little deeper into this story and write another book with new and more details.
a long read, tough at times. Thomas Wolfe has a way with prose and philosophy thats hard to find anywhere else.

Culturally relevant and interesting as one of the primary foundations of Chinese thought and culture. That being said, it is pretty tedious to get through with many references to people and events that are outside of my grasp of Chinese history.
