It is a true testament to how freaking hilarious P.G. Wodehouse is that I kind of want to read this book again despite its use of the 'n' word and Bertie's blackening his face to create the central mistaken-identity gags. I doubt this book will ever be on Oprah's Book Club list, and while I would usually mean that as a compliment, sadly in this instance it is an insult. So much of this book was so truly, truly funny that I couldn't stop reading it, though. I wouldn't claim to be the most sensitive reader ever, but usually if I notice racism, it will kill a book for me. This definitely made me uncomfortable, and I imagine myself giving Mr. Wodehouse what could only be described as a "cold and stern stare" after the fashion of Bertie's Aunt Agatha, but it was even interesting how nonchalant the racism was. I guess it would be uncharacteristic for our dear Mr. Wooster and his cronies to have regard for people of other races (unless, of course, they brought breakfast with them), and that even adds an additional sense of the period in which this book was written. Jeeves is a wonder, though! I can really only take off one star for the discomfort caused by the racism. Wodehouse writes, well, like a leopard. The book is dripping with wit, hilarity, and ham sandwiches.

** spoiler alert ** Thank goodness the whole book was not just about Jack and his Ma being held captive in Room! The narration was hard to get used to, being narrated by Jack, a 5 yr old. But I thought the second half of the book was interesting, with Jack adapting to the "outside."

the touching story of Randy Pausch. he was a proffessor who was dying of pancreatic cancer. he chose to live the rest of his life instead of wallowing in self pity. this is the last lecture that he gave to his students. it is about remaining optomistic, even as his young children watched him die. he is an inspiration.

Re-read March 2012 * I could read this book every day, and never get tired of it* Wow, how did I get so lucky to read two great books in a row? I'll tell you how - Goodreads.com and Borders. When I posted my recommendation for Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, I got a page that said "people who recommended this book also recommended... Guersney. I looked at it, but I thought the only thing it had in common was WWII, which isn't a genre I'm particularly interested in, so I said "No thanks." Then I went to Borders, which had up the famous "If you like these, you'll like this" section. Well the "these" showed Hotel, Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, which I love, and the Piano Teacher, which I enjoyed - and the "this" was - you guessed it, Guernsey. At that point I gave into fate and bought the book. I'm so glad that I did. Guernesy is set just after WWII ends, and is entirely composed of fictional letters and correspondence. The main character is JK Rowling funny in a similarly british way, and by pg. 11 I was already recommending it. It's amzing how much you could learn about characters by their own, and other's letters. They were vivid, they were real, and I enjoyed them tremendously. I could not put it down - read it in 1 day. You'll thoroughly enjoy this book. You'll laugh more than you cry, but you will cry. You may forget the name, but you won't forget the book.

A little bit of science, an intriguing dose of history and a big scoop of adventure. The plot kept me turning pages, and I have to say I enjoyed the read. There wasn't a lot of substance to the story and none of the characters had enough depth to make them memorable.
