This book is simply amazing. It makes me homesick and anxious to take my own road trip across America. Gaiman has managed to address the issue of religion in a fascinating way. I could not put this book down and found it to be one of his best. Simply a book to get lost in.

Contains one of the most moving and romantic passages that I have ever read. A challenging read but worth it jsut for those moments of transcendence; i.e. "... the soft filtered light continued to push the darkness into the shadows as they held each other and kissed and pushed each others darkness into the corner, believeing in each others light, each others dream." [lack of apostrophes is author's own device].

G. K. Chesterton was a prolific writer, humorist and philosopher around the turn of the century. He wrote Orthodoxy in 1909 in response to his own book Heretics, which he wrote about 5 years earlier about the philosophers of the time and how off the mark many of them were. One of my very learned and scholarly friends considers it the best non-scriptural text he has ever read. I have enjoyed Orthodoxy completely. It will make you think. He will make you smile. I think you will enjoy it. I have selected currently reading because I will read it again and again.

Introductory descriptive grammar of Persian. You'd need more to actually learn the language, but this is a good reference for linguists. I like this slightly better than Thackston's An Introduction to Persian because I think the font is prettier.
Incredible plot, fast paced story, profound and creative ideas. The writing/translators are great here and the story is wonderful
I love books like this and the ending was perfect.

Tere-Liye nyata menambah senarai peminatnya. Saya! Plot Yang Menarik Permulaan dengan watak seorang kanak-kanak perempuan bernama Rinai membuat saya tertanya-tanya di sepanjang pembacaan. Ke mana hilangnya watak anak ini? http://farizahrin.blogspot.com/2011/0...
Expecting to pick up this book and read it as you would, say, a science novel or a dramatic novel, would be entirely the wrong approach. "The End of Mr Y" is an exploration of the Weird, and not just because of its quasi-serious links to quantum physics, religion and/or consciousness exploration. These become less the matter of the novel, and more the props with which it's played. It is, ultimately, the exploration of one woman's life and her feelings of inadequacy about it. Everything stems from her wanting more, wanting answers to questions she isn't aware of; beyond the confines of her own life. Ultimately, it confronts us with the question of whether we would do the same in her place. It isn't for everyone. Ultimately the jargon used may be offputting, and the ending and related storylines may seem a little weak when compared against the promise of the early plot teasers. But some perseverance, and a conscious effort to think outside the box, will yield a very rich and thought-provoking novel. And as a bonus, you will learn something about theoretical physics along the way. All in all, a bargain.

Could have been a depressing little story but Margaret saved it. Black Widow alert!! I didn't see the end coming and that was nice. Recommendation from Cyn

GoodReads says I've been reading Someone Comes to Town since 3 April. That's when I discovered and downloaded the back-episodes of Cory Doctorow's ongoing reading of his novel. It finished last week and I'm pleased. The book tells the story of a man in a magical family of oddities: his father is a mountain, his mother a washing machine. He's got a bunch of magical brothers, including an evil one. The main character also undertakes crazy maker projects, like sanding his entire house and filling it with bookshelves. And helping a dumpster-diver build a citywide free wifi network. It's an enchanting book with major drama and a good arc, but it's in the little details that it really succeeds. The sections about network philosophy could be excised from the magical horrorshow and be their own thing. A few other thoughts: * More than some of Doctorow's other books, I feel like there are a lot of tangents or threads that weave in and out of the story but don't get resolved. Under that umbrella of real-life's unexplained and unrelated events, the magical elements of the story stay in bounds, and the story doesn't feel like a cheat. * There's an amusing twist in the idea that Alan (the main character) and his other brothers are each named ordinally, using the alphabet for their first initials. The names themselves are less important, so the narrator and characters refer to Alan by any random A name. It's a little disconcerting early on but it works later. * That the audio-book is being performed by the author gives the interpretive elements a distinction and value that are just great. The down side, however, is that the timely updates on Doctorow's status will seem odd and annoying in archived versions of the book. I also tired of the cuckoo clock. I like it, but Doctorow commented about how he liked it every darn time it went off. * I mentioned the book shelf project above, but I wanted to quote the relevant passage below. It's the bibliophile's fantasy. * I've pondered the title, which doesn't have the utilitarian title like Eastern Standard Tribe or the jaunty zazz of Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom. Zazz aside, I don't understand it. It could refer to Alan's brothers, who interrupt his wacky life in his polished-wood bookshelf house. He could be both, the person who comes and the person who leaves. Anyhow, worth a look or listen if you're into his books or this sounds interesting to you.
