I LOVE CASSANDRA CLARE'S WRITING. THE STORY O F CLARY AND JACE IS CAPTIVATING THE WHOLE WAY THROUGH <3
A boy on scholarship at a prep school desperately wants to win one of the coveted prizes of sitting with a visiting writer. To do this, he must compose a story or poem that rises above those of his classmates. Throughout the novel, our narrator judges his competitors, exposing weaknesses and potential; however, his inability to come to terms with his own roots keep him from writing something truly heartfelt and extraordinary and thus keep him from winning the audience with the famous writers he so desperately seeks. At the end of the term, he is determined to win the last and best guest, legendary Ernest Hemingway. In drafting his final submission, the narrator finds a voice in the experiences of someone else, so identifying with their prose that he adopts it as his own. Well-written, subtle. Highly recommended.

Interesting and informative, sure. But BORING. Where's the punchline? Geeze.
I kept wanting to describe this books as cyber-punk, but I suppose it's technically not. It feels like it, though. It's another entry in the female urban magic mystery genre, (Kim Harrison, Kelley Armstrong, etc) which is a genre I enjoy a lot. When I started it the cliches were grating, but the story drew me enough to get past that. No real surprises, but it's an interesting world, a kick-ass protagonist, and a lot of fun.
The story is told by Beth, 15, who lives on a farm in B.C. during the second world war. This is a story about poverty, prejudice, ignorance, love, hate, feuds, shape-shifting, abuse, legends and more. There is so much going on in this story - too much? - I thought so. I thought the best thing about this book was the mother's scrapbook, it was full of recipes, remedies, pressed flowers, articles, notes and memories. It was her safe and private place, her life.

You know the canonical essay question, "If you could meet anyone in history, who would it be?" My answer is Bill Bryson. He's a treasure. I'd love to watch him write. I imagine him tugging scraps of paper from him pockets, pawing through notes, scribbling a few sentences through the haze of pipe smoke, and chuckling a bit before pulling out more notes. He's hilarious. He commands the English language like Pele commands a soccer ball, etching metaphors that resonate and wonder why you didn't think of it first.

Another bubblegum western from the most prolific western writer of our time. Mr. L'Amour can take you back to the time of the early west like none other.

My first reaction: fascinating, I always knew it, but isn't he contradicting himself? Gladwell says that we learn as much from what we learn in an instant as we do from extended study of a person or situation. Yet he also talks about the value of the instant reactions of experts, who have devoted years to extended study. Hm ... well, read it yourself and see what you think. It will probably get you looking at the way you look at things, and for that alone it's worth reading.

The best book I've read all year. Wow. I'm depressed that I have to wait for the final installment.
