It's been years since I've read a Shakespeare play and reading this one made me realize how shameful that is. Despite (or because of) the convoluted and sometimes downright bizarre plot (Jupiter, yes the Roman god, makes an entrance to help the plot along), I found the play both delightful and fascinating. (Same for the Cheek by Jowl production of it I saw at BAM a couple of days later.)

I never read this as a kid the way a lot of folks I know did. The writing style is very dated, which certainly explains why so many people who do read it as kids have really awful experiences/memories of it and end up really hating it. Nobody writes like that anymore. I think I appreciate it much more now than I would have then. Absolutely the ultimate quest tale, and I completely enjoyed going along on the journey.

This rating might go up to four stars; I'm still thinking about it.

This book was well written, although it got very preachy at the end (almost like reading an Ayn Rand book). And I vehemently do not agree with Michael Crichton's take on global warming being a hoax.

I have never seen this show, but my ex really digs these books so I gave them a go, because we have similar tastes. And I liked it. It's really good, and kind of an easy fun read. I should really get the rest of the series.

Sooooo, there's been a copy of this sitting on my shelf for a while. We'll see. Edit: I actually wanted to give this book between three and four stars--I had problems with it, but ultimately enjoyed it. My biggest problem was how it seemed to become a completely different book about 2/3 of the way through, turning from Prep (with MLA format citations) into a detective thriller (with MLA format citations), but I have to admit that I had a very hard time putting it down during those last hundred pages and Pessl was extremely clever in recasting and reinterpreting everything that you've read up to that point. I wanted to dislike it more than I actually did--the writing was annoyingly self-conscious and precocious but undeniably interesting and the narrative was absorbing enough that I found myself actually forgetting to roll my eyes at some of the overwrought similes. So, I don't know...if I define a successful book as one that keeps me compulsively turning the pages, then this one was a success.

I read stories 1 and 3. Trying to keep up with Betsy and the Wyndham Werewolves is enough. I didn't want to start with a whole other line of books right now!

I thought this book was good because it brought to light a subject (teens/young adults and drinking) that deserves some deeper introspection. There were parts I could relate to (luckily not too much though!) I also liked her feminist connections.

This will be our May selection to read for our June meeting! I'm excited...I've already purchased from Powells as I noticed it on sale there a few weeks ago.

It flips colonial romance novels about the white European female kidnapped by a suave Sultan (insert here Valentino) and makes it into a beautiful story of a British woman and an Egyptian Sultan in love. A beautiful historical novel of Egypt in the Colonial era.

In her memoir of her father, Margaret Salinger notes that had it not been for Autobiography of a Yogi, she would never have been born. Her father, J.D. Salinger, had already begun his reclusive lifestyle. He wanted to divorce himself from the duties of domesticity and family life in order to achieve a higher spiritual consciousness. However, Paramhansa Yogananda 's book revealed to him that -in his understanding - salvation can also come to those who live a family life yet still practice his science of Kriya Yoga. Autobiography of a Yogi details the stories of Hindu asetics, manifesting themselves in any space and any time they so choose; yogis healing the sick of infirmities and taking the burdens upon themselves; the ordinary man and his insistence on logic as the only tool possible for understanding the world around him, and being overcome by events which pass understanding. What is also fascinating about this book is that it details the wonder-workers of other faiths: a Muslim able to manifest any physical thing at will; a Catholic nun who does not eat and lives solely on the light of Christ, suffering the stigmata frequently in her German country hermitage; a Unitarian Universalist botanist who found God in the plants around him. In that way, this was a fun read. Yet, these varieties of religious experience are endemic of late 19th-century religious pluralism and its holdovers like Yogananda. While it was interesting to see these different quests for God, one thing that kept coming up throughout the text were these individuals who, through extensive intellectual or physical rigor, were coming closer to God. They were working really hard to reach God. Yet, the Christian gospel says that God will reach out to us, no matter how hard we work or how well we do. Because He is that good.
