For several long years I intended to get started on Middlesex. The book won the Pulitzer Prize for Christ's sake... what was stopping me? I borrowed and returned a copy unread and then picked up my own for $.50 at a book fair. It sat for a long time. Initially the length was the primary turn off -- I'm not scared away by lengthy fiction, but when one day I opened up my copy and read the intro pages, the style turned me off to a 500+ page investment. After I felt I'd waited long enough, and when my selection of next-books-to-read-on-hand got terribly thin, I finally read it. Maybe I didn't get it. I took a "Sexuality in Literature" course and a 400-level discussion course in college about gender and sexuality in America and felt like those discussions and papers combined with my worldly views and my liberal disposition set me up nicely to really accept a book about a hermaphrodite and their life and struggles. What I got what some version of an incestuous, three-generation family history sprinkled with tiny peeks into adult Cal's life living as a man. Once Cal's section of the book comes alive, I wanted to get more about her experiences growing up in a conflicted body. They're there of course, but limited. I guess my expectation was too high? Maybe I was anticipating something more pornographic, or voyeuristic? It just fell flat with me for the most part. When Cal travels to New York my interest was renewed and then quickly faded away again when she leaves shortly thereafter. Considering it is a novel with such praise (again, re: Pulitzer) and the recommendations I'd heard, I was disappointed that I didn't enjoy it. It made me feel less intelligent -- did I miss something? -- what's the hype!?! -- is a problem of relation? On the plus, it was so eloquently written (even if it left me wanting) and it ignited a new interest in Detroit (Middlesex's back drop and maybe even a character in and of itself as it changes significantly over time). At least I can tell myself I read an award winner.

There are tensions in the story from the start. Polly has been Rose’s friend since they were 6 and they’re now in their late thirties and you soon realise that their shared history is going to be significant to the story. Rose has a very ordered and domesticated life that she wants to immerse herself in and Polly, an ex-musician, couldn’t be more different. The arrival of Polly and her two sons throws the household into chaos. As the story unfolds it becomes apparent that Rose is keeping secrets from Polly and Gareth and you can’t help but think that these are going to lead to trouble. There is a sense of mounting tension in the book, all the more disturbing for the comfortable domestic setting that makes it easy to identify with. When I took a break from the book I went back to it with a real sense of dread. We only see the story from Rose’s perspective, so you never know the truth about the situations she finds herself in and sometimes I wondered about her own motivation in the way she acted. This is a great first novel, but more middle-aged & middle-class than something like a Nicci French thriller. I found it hard to put the book down (sense of dread aside) I really wanted to know what was going to happen next. For me it just left too many questions unanswered, and from a personal preference I do like the author to tell me what had happened, rather than leave it to my imagination.

8/26/11: Contrived, overwrought, and melodramatic--this novel irritated me from start to finish. While the topic (the roundup of Jews in Paris in 1942, known as the Vel d'Hiv) is an important historical event that should definitely be brought to light, while the author's earnest efforts to evoke what it must have been like for those involved is laudable, and while I'm sure it will make a great movie, the writing, characterization, and story line are frustratingly clumsy. There are some great scenes (hence the easy transfer to the screen) and the structure of the book is interesting. Also, she writes well about the ambivalence of the French towards their own historical mistakes. But the protagonist's growing fascination (okay, obsession) with Sarah and with her husband's family's tangential involvement in Vel d'Hiv doesn't ring true. Thus Julia herself becomes just a vehicle for the plot, less and less believable as the story progresses. Other characters appear, but are never fully developed, only to act as foils or supports to Julia's search. There are also tantalizing clues to the possibility that Julia is searching for answers to more than just questions about Sarah's unfinished story--there are big questions about her unhappy marriage, her love affair with France, her inability to have another child. But although the end seems to be a Happily Ever After, those questions are never really considered. She ditches her husband and adopted country with nary a backwards glance, which, while certainly possible, is not very satisfying in a novel!
