This book starts out ok, but the whole thing seems to ride on one gory scene that, once over, doesn't get developed into anything terribly satisfying. I dunno, maybe there are layers here that my easy, suburban upbringing doesn't allow me to understand, but I'm fairly certain the book is just average.

The Invisible Bridge is one of the best books I have read in the past few years! Andras Levi is a Hungarian architecture student studying at the Ecole Speciale in Paris. Through the small Hungarian community he meets ballet instructor Claire Morgenstern, a woman 9 years older than him. That age difference is shocking among their friends and families, but Andras and Klara fall in love. This is all happening in 1937, when Hungary becomes allied with Germany and anti-semitism is washing through Europe. Andras, Klara, and all their fellow Jews become subject to increasing discrimination and persecution in France and in Hungary. The Invisible Bridge is epic: a love story, historical human rights struggles, and war.

David Sedaris gets a little more personal and heartfelt in this collection of essays. However, for those of you that like your funny bone tickled, there are some definite howlers on this one. Overall though, to really enjoy Sedaris, I think it is necessary to listen to him on audio. While he does craft the written word well, to get the full meaning of his essays, listening to him is required. I recommend any of his audiobooks for any long trip in the car. It will bring you and your loved ones together, and eat up many long miles, even on the dreaded I-5.

Это прекрасная книга для руководителей. Настоящих и будущих. Неважно, будет это собственный бизнес, огромная компания, отдел из нескольких человек, домашнее хозяйство или даже собственное тело. Джек Уэлч - один из самых известных менеджеров 20 века. Он знаменит своей твердостью и жесткостью, однако при этом огромной креативностью, увлеченностью и, конечно, успешностью. За 20 лет работы на высшей руководящей должности компании General Electric он увеличил размеры компании в 10 раз. Мне дал прочитать эту книгу начальник, чтобы дать мне возможность личного роста. Для меня важнее всего была психология поступков Джека. А также способность проникать в суть, без которой невозможно управиться с такой огромной компанией. P.S. Возможно многих, как и меня, безумно раздражают книги про стартап, про то как сделать бизнес и срубать кучу бабла и прочий мусор для фантазеров из которых стоит читать 1 из 20. Эта книга не из этой серии.

Though I read this book years ago, I just noticed the many negative reviews that it received here on Goodreads and wanted to put my two cents in on the subject. A lot of people seem to be angry at Corinne Hofmann because she acts so ignorantly. They don't understand the instant attraction she has for Lketinga and how she can decide to live in the bush with him and "invade his culture". I think these people may never have fallen head over heels in love nor are very risk-taking or open-minded to the possibility of feeling such a strong connection with a person and/or a country. I admire her pursuit of love and her struggle to stay with the man she loves, even though he doesn't always treat her very well. You have to keep in mind that this is a different culture where women are less important than men, and she just tries to find her balance there. A real Masai woman would probably not even protest or try to change her situation (and as we all know from television and magazines, a lot of so-called civilised women don't either!), something you can't accuse Hofmann of. In the end, (view spoiler). Does this make it a failed relationship with no added value whatsoever? Certainly not. I think both Hofmann and Lketinga, and all the other people involved, have had experiences that most people will never have in a lifetime. This becomes clearer in the sequels, in which we also learn how the author and later on her editor try to help the local situation there. In part three, she describes the first reunion with her African family, who welcome her home after fourteen years. Would they really do that if she had ruined everything in their eyes?

an insightful unraveling of the rational mind after the sudden death of a loved one (her husband) and the impending death of another (her daughter). the year of magical thinking is the time of mourning, where events prior to death are overanalyzed and events after death are precarious. to write something as personal as this, i loved joan's journalistic approach of incorporating fact and research as well as memories as an attempt for her to regain some control (as well as some understanding) of the events beyond her control.
