Persepolis is een autobiografisch verhaal. Het hoofdpersonage was ongeveer in dezelfde periode een tiener als ik, wat enorm veel herkenbare zeitgeist oplevert. Een goed boek voor wie vergeten is dat al die in hoofddoeken- en lange gewaden gehulde vrouwen en die mannen met baarden in Iran mensen zoals u en ik zijn die tot voor kort ook een gewoon Westers leven leidden. Het eerste deel, dat zich in Iran afspreelt, levert qua historische informatie een nogal chaotisch rommeltje op. Misschien ligt dat aan het feit dat het verhaal verteld wordt vanuit het perspectief van een tienjarige. Misschien is dat ook simpelweg te wijten aan het feit dat die hele revolutie in Iran een niet te vatten zaak is waarin logica niet bepaald een hoofdrol heeft gespeeld. Je wordt minstens een beetje kwaad op de ayatollah's.

Possibly the best entry in this long-running series. Tight, well-crafted, fast-paced, suspenseful. Two of my favorite supporting characters, Trent and Al, are spotlighted this time out, in a wonderfully twisty story. The worldbuilding takes a big step forward as well, with much more information about demonesses, the elves and a coming crisis skillfully woven into the narration. Couldn't put it down. A real win. Oh, and two excellent and long overdue kisses, one that paid off years of my fannish longing :)

I couldn't put this book down, once the Andi began reading Alexandrine's diary. It sounded intriguing at first but then, the French Revolution, really? 2011 Brooklyn too? When I finally began it, I was a little disappointed—moved a little slow, a girl so miserable that all she can think/feel is about herself and how sorry she is and what a rotten dad she has. Then she was made to go to Paris and she found a diary. The author did an excellent job of painting life in French Revolution Paris and Alexandre, the diary's author. The switches from 1795 to 2011 and back are seamless, effortless, and timed perfectly. I began to like Andi and appreciate her pain more. I caught myself urging her on, ask for help, and believe in herself. She was an accomplished musician and the world needed her. The author told a fantastic story and made me admire the 2 girls and their courage and hope. It would be a great book to enhance the history curriculum. I highly recommend this to everyone!!!!

I thought I'd like this book more than I did. Everyone raved about it so much. Thank goodness there was a family tree in the beginning which helped me keep track of all the characters. Overall, an interesting story, but it started out great and lost it's momentum as the book went on for me.

This was really my first exposure to Ricketts, besides some brief mentions among friends and sites while in the Monterey area. The biography is written with great affection for Ricketts as a free spirit and groundbreaking scientist, but does not skip over his troubles. Recommended for fans of Steinbeck, as the influence of Ricketts on his greatest works is quite profound.
