A down to earth book about tragedy. The characters and their actions are believable. A couple loses their young son in a car accident and try to cope with the old friend who was driving drunk and losing their only child.

I'm re-reading this series because Caitlin and I are giving a presentation on them at the end of the semester. I really like these books--and specifically this character--but I wasn't so crazy about this one. I think I might be getting a little sick of the character learning the same lessons with each book.

This book was highly recommended, so maybe I just expected more from it. The book is divided into Before and After and centers around a big event in the middle. I thought the format was clever, but the story was sort of mundane. The main character, Miles or "Pudge" suffers from the too-smart too-introspective flaw that many YA heros do and somehow it didn't work for me in this book. The whole book felt too often like one of those teaching skits we had to do to improve our self-esteem in school -- the musings on what gives like meaning, hope, etc. were too heavy-handed for my taste.
