So happy Myron is back. I always miss him and enjoyed this read of Harlan's as much as all the rest.

Okay, I finally finished this interminably long book.... I couldn't figure out quite why it felt so long, until Lena pointed out that it has 600 pages - it was deceptively thin for a book so long. Anyway, I actually did like it for the most part. It started kind of slow for me, but then it picked up, and I really liked the last 1/4 of the book. It's not a book I probably would have read on my own, but I guess that's the point of book club.... I liked a lot of the characters - particularly Trish, June, Rusty, Nestor, and Raymond (yes, I know he's an ostrich, but he still had character!) The main character was a big wuss, and although funny, he was so pathetic I couldn't really connect with him much, although his misadventures were entertaining. At least he somewhat redeemed himself at the end, thank goodness. I found the parts about the nuclear testing very interesting, and wished there was a bit more about that. (It's pretty horrifying - I'm kind of tempted to look up some of his sources and read more about this....) The book was well-written, with occasional moments of unexpected beauty, and I loved his hilarious and kooky descriptions of the characters - they make you feel like you can really see the situation exactly as described in your mind. However, despite this, something was missing for me, and I didn't realize what it was until I was finished, and started reading Matched - which I dove into like falling down a rabbit hole, and read the entire first half in one day. The Lonely Polygamist just never sucked me in - it always felt like I was just trying to get through it, rather than reading it because I really was engaged in it. And I agree with mother's final assessment: Maureen Sinkfoyle - seriously??!?
I enjoyed this book. It kept my attention, although I couldn't relate to the topic of divorce (I'm only 24), I did enjoy the story and the characters.

First published in 1989, so a bit dated, but JAK was ahead of the times in that her heroines actually had brains, careers and weren't helpless virgins waiting for the man to rescue them. I prefer her later stand-alone novels to this one.
One of my FAVORITE books!!! Probably time to read it again.

It is about time someone addresses the lost stories of the women of the Bible, and Diamant has done a beautiful job of researching and writing the story of Jacob's only daughter, Dinah, whose existence is only a whisper in Genesis. The story brings to life the cultural and political environment in ancient Mesopotamia, and the area that now includes Lebanon, Syria, Israel, Palestine and Egypt. Beautifully written, riveting and inspiring.

I love Eight COusins and loved to continue the story in Rose in Bloom, a beautiful addition to the preceeding novel.
Short stories that you want to read over and over again because each time you read them you discover new dimensions in the characters and the conflicts.

I feel like Levine peaked with her first novel, Ella Enchanted. I was tempted into reading this one because the setting, inspiration, and writing style were new and exciting, but that was misleading. It was still only a mediocre read. Her characters and their experiences were flat.
