Good story and interesting telling. There are short first-person narratives regarding the same event. This felt somewhat like the first-person narratives in The Time Traveler's Wife where you get to learn about the event from a each character's experience (and with their bias). The author did a good job with this and it was the main reason I enjoyed the book. The reason for the lower rating is that the book is fairly dark (in the first 25 pages the 3-year-old gets hit by a car, you find out her dad is having an affair and one person commits suicide). It does get better from there and the ending is more bittersweet than dark (if a tiny bit predictable). But in terms of what I tend to call the drama factor, I think people that like Jodi Picoult and don't mind a little supernatural in their stories would love this book. The author does a good job letting the characters grow and learn.

A great vacation read (it took me a half-day to read the whole thing) and a must-read for any female attorney. It's a hilarious story of an overworked London lawyer who loses her job, but then finds a new one....as a housekeeper.

In addition to the author's primary mission of giving women a venue to speak out and share the stories of their abortions, there is a good chapter on the role of feminists in the pro-life movement and the need to bridge gaps, with recommendations of how they could better support women who choose to continue their pregnancies.

Another book I just could not seem to finish. Maybe it's the subject matter?

it calls itself a "melodrama" on the cover, but it's not nearly as hackneyed or over-rich as that label suggests. it's got a lot of classic elements--orphans, mysteries, victorian setting--but it's also got complex, both-bad-and-good characters and humor and a really darn satisfying narrative. should have won the newbery!

There are so many details from this series that I really enjoy. Clare has written a compelling and engaging alternate world. Those who populate it are dynamic, interesting, and likable. Often, the dialogue is witty and as entertaining as it is significant. Unlike, the Twilight series, all of the characters have a past and remain true to their original natures throughout the whole of the series. On the other hand, the storyline is nothing new (but, then, what is?) I found that the plot of City of Glass, the conclusion to the Mortal Instruments series, could be, at times, predictable. I have to give credit where it is due, however. At the end of this book everything ties together in a satisfying and skillful way that attests to Clare's ability as a story teller.

I had never heard of this book but read it for book club. It is wonderful, a tale of rites of passage and the influence of parents, history and environment. I highly recommend it!

"Holes," by Louis Sachar, was one of my favorite books when I was a little bit younger. The story is about a young teenager named Stanley Yelnats, who is wrongly accused of stealing a famous baseball player's pair of shoes at a charity auction, due to a "family cure." Stanley is given the choice to either go to a camp for juvenile detention, or to serve time in jail. Once at camp, Stanley and the other kids are digging holes in the ground for a lost treasure. This book is never a bore and you will not want to put it down.
I had put off reading this until this past week. It was my favorite out of all 7.

I loved this book, not least because I identified so strongly with some elements, having lived in the academic environment she describes and having a brother in law with Downs. There are other reasons this book was so special, and I strongly recommend it.
