Read as part of my QGB Q3 Challenge picked by Pia. Just enough fun and frolick during my favorite time of the year. I loved the spin on the Santa mythology. I would enjoy looking in on these elves again, they sure know how to celebrate the season!

I first read this as a college freshman, and I remember being totally blown away. Great book.

A classic that continues to be relevent and teach the same valuable lesson each time it is read. A friend of mine has the cover illustration tattooed on her ankle. Wish I had thought of that first!

An interesting overview of Romania - good for those with little previous knowledge of the country, as facts are often repeated throughout the book. It's important to recognize that the authors are rather biased towards Romania, and present it in a much more positive light than other surrounding countries that are discussed. it is important to realize that the book is written with a pro-Romania agenda, and that some of the more upsetting parts of Romania's past have been glossed over.

Man, so many kids at the school where I work are into these books, so I figured I had to read one. It's sort of silly horror, with lots of exclamation marks! But the plot twists are enough to keep you reading through each spidery chapter to find out what happens. I read this in a few hours, and have to admit I was curious what happens in the next book. While this is not my favorite book as an adult, I would have loved it in junior high (as long as I didn't know how popular it was and thought I was the only one reading it). I also like that, like Christopher Pike books, it is very guy oriented. Nice antidote to the rapturous love stories of girls swooning for badboy vampires. No love stories here, just deadly tarantulas and nasty vampires looking for assistants.

These stories are best read one at a time in a quite moment when you have some time to think (as the author says in the introduction). If used in the right way and with the right attitude they can force the reader to think differently about faith and belief; to focus more on living out their faith in the here and now rather than dreaming of heavenly rewards or obsessed with correct doctrine. But the drawback is that the message is almost always the same: love of God and our fellow man is the foundation of Christian fatih and too often other things and attitudes dominate. I also think there is a bit too much commentary at times - rather than letting the reader work harder at the message of the parables. I think these stories would be a great tool for a Sunday School class or small group. Reading a story each week would generate discussion and allw readers to further explore the ideas. Some, the stories provocative for the sake of it and others might find Rollins ideas a little too heavy on the post-modern philosophy and language (he doesn't use academic terms and language per se but his perspective is infused with the mindset and perspective). I enjoyed the book but definitely not for everyone.

The title of this novel is taken from a line in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's story "Silver Blaze": "'Is there any point to which you would wish to draw my attention?' 'To the curious incident of the dog in the night-time.' 'The dog did nothing in the night-time.' 'That was the curious incident,' remarked Sherlock Holmes."

A bit shaky at first -- I was wondering why it was a MG book at all, since the main character didn't really *do* anything -- but it redeemed itself in the end. Can't wait to read the next one.

Though Howl was not one of my favourites, I picked this book up because it is a combination of the original typed manuscript (including penned corrections, changes etc) and the full poem. It was worth it for the glimpse into the creative process from which arose the monstrous rambling mother of all rants. After reading it, I gained a new appreciation for the poem and the America of Ginsberg at that moment in history. a time of tumult exploding across page after page.
