Decently entertaining, but it gets tangled up in itself and lost track of it's own story from time to time. All in all, an entertaining retelling of Rapunzel.

This wasn't as hard for me to read as "The Kite Runner" because it wasn't hitting me on the head with foreshadowing. The same feel as Hosseini's previous book, with a different gender and trials, but with less irony and a bit more believable.
Smith explores the intersection of transitioning cultural, sexual, generational, religious and national identities in the lives of each of the book's characters. Other authors have done that before, sure, but Smith makes it fun. Its surprise ending (oh my god, not a surprise ending!) is a bit silly and disappointing. However, in the meat of the book, I found myself stumbling on really wonderful paragraphs, each word perfectly fit for the context without giving away too much. Those little beautiful moments made me smile. One little qualm, to make this a truly comprehensive review: I was put off by the occasional haphazard use of magic realism where, in my mind, it does not belong (adds nothing to the plot, character development, or any other facet of the work). I would recommend this, but I wouldn't viciously force it on people, as I do some other books.

Somehow, the series gets better. Just when you think it was impossible, George R. R. Martin tops himself. Incredible story. Incredible installment.

Not many people read this book compared to how often the book is quoted, so I read this book and now can't think of a thing to say. I've been searching for the greatest story ever told, the greatest book ever written and this came close.

yes, i'm one of those people eagerly anticipating the final book.
From the first page up 'til the last, I was completely engrossed and enlightened. I connected with the Codi character extremely. She was an overeducated achiever coming back to the town that scorned her. As the book progresses Barbara Kingsolver reveals the human flaws of the whole town. She also teaches you to live how you feel happy living and to ignore the world and their comments. This book is one that keep me guessing and left me with a realistic ending. Also, I recommend this to friends.

This is easily the best example of a layperson's history of science I've ever come across; and I mean that as a compliment. Dolnick did a fantastic job of exploring the Royal Society era in overview, with plain language and easy-to-follow explanations of some of the most important ideas of the modern world. When I picked this book up, I confess I was a bit concerned by the large typeface and terribly short chapters that typically mark those nonfiction books that will teach me nothing. I was pleasantly surprised then to discover that the author found an embarrassingly gaping hole in my historical knowledge and filled it in a truly engaging way. It's a very well-written document of 17th century England, the Royal Society, Gallileo, Kepler, Newton, and Leibniz-- along with all the science and mathematics the century entailed. I learned a remarkable amount about the plague (yes, the plague was a gaping hole in my historical knowledge. I'm a psychologist, not a historian!), brushed up on my Newtonian physics, discovered the reassuring string of failures encountered by some of the world's brightest minds, and learned more about the man whose work served as basis for Voltaire's Candide. All this without every feeling tangential (pun not intended)! I think I will look into more of Dolnick's work and let it serve as an introductory course on historical topics I should know so much more about, but don't.
