This is easily the best example of a layperson's history of science I've ever come across; and I mean that as a compliment. Dolnick did a fantastic job of exploring the Royal Society era in overview, with plain language and easy-to-follow explanations of some of the most important ideas of the modern world. When I picked this book up, I confess I was a bit concerned by the large typeface and terribly short chapters that typically mark those nonfiction books that will teach me nothing. I was pleasantly surprised then to discover that the author found an embarrassingly gaping hole in my historical knowledge and filled it in a truly engaging way. It's a very well-written document of 17th century England, the Royal Society, Gallileo, Kepler, Newton, and Leibniz-- along with all the science and mathematics the century entailed. I learned a remarkable amount about the plague (yes, the plague was a gaping hole in my historical knowledge. I'm a psychologist, not a historian!), brushed up on my Newtonian physics, discovered the reassuring string of failures encountered by some of the world's brightest minds, and learned more about the man whose work served as basis for Voltaire's Candide. All this without every feeling tangential (pun not intended)! I think I will look into more of Dolnick's work and let it serve as an introductory course on historical topics I should know so much more about, but don't.
