Read the first book in this volume~Second Nature. Rather predictable, but enjoyable. 3 stars. The second book in this 2-in-one One Summer, another predictalbe but enjoyable story. 3 stars.

** spoiler alert ** Fascinating... Well Crafted... Complex... Full of tension and irony... The Memory Keeper's Daughter was all this and more. While the main thrust of the story is centered around a father's decision to send away his daughter (who was born with Downs Syndrome) and tell his wife that the child died, there is a theme of secrets and unspoken truths that run throughout the book. Like the recurring images of photographic negatives and x-rays, these secrets... both the things lying beneath the surface and the negative spaces between people are vital, defining forces in the story but never veer into the melodramatic. But the thing I like the most about this book is that Phoebe, supposedly the character who is the most "handicapped" is the happy and healthy one in the book. She is completely content with her life, able to communicate freely and be in a happy and successful relationship, something that few of the other characters achieved as well or as easliy. And when her mother and brother finally meet her, assuming that they will have to rescue her, she declines both their help and pity. She has a life that she loves... a job, a boyfriend, a family... one that she built on her own terms. I love how she forces them to see her as her own person... not as an abstract "long lost daughter" or "person with Downs Syndrome" but just as Phoebe.

I probably enjoyed these strips more than those contained in the previous volume, but these still leave me rather cold. I can appreciate the pure weirdness of McCay's visions, but I don't know that I'm enthralled enough to pursue this series of early works any further. The problem has persisted from the prior volume of many of the reprints being very degraded in quality -- I'm not sure if there was an aesthetic reason behind the decision to not attempt any restoration, but in some places the dialogue is unreadable so at least a footnote would have been helpful.

non voglio fare spoiler e quindi in questo caso dovrò stare molto attenta, Non lasciarmi ha infatti una struttura perfetta che insieme a una sapientissima costruzione della suspance svela poco a poco qual è il senso del romanzo. Pare la narrazione, in età adulta, dell'infanzia e adolescenza di Kathy e i suoi due migliori amici in un collegio inglese, ma subito si avverte un'inquietudine persistente. Kathy, Tommy e Ruth non sono orfani eppure nessuno li va a trovare, sono completamente separati dal mondo esterno. Presto percepiscono che i loro tutori hanno un primo momento di disgusto quando inaspettatamente li incrociano per i corridoi. E poi ci sono gli strani riti che accompagnano la loro vita ad Hailsham, il magnifico luogo in cui sono rinchiusi. Come ho detto, una magnifica costruzione della suspance e un romanzo intessuto della materia del ricordo in un continuo andare a ritroso alla ricerca di un senso. Il titolo a questo commento è un piccolo indizio, perché penso che la copertina dell'Einaudi sia molto fuorviante. Non c'è niente da ridere, tanto per cominciare, anche se la tenerezza, e anche un'incomprensibile empatia, fanno la loro parte in questo meraviglioso romanzo.

Neal Asher has been one of my finds of the year. For some reason, I returned to Hard-Fi after many years and this was the first book by him I read. It is truly excellent in that the science is a given but is sufficiently well thought out to be cohesive. Three intelligences journey to the planet Spatterjay to find out what has become of the infamous Captain Hoop. One is planning a journey of justice, delayed for many years. The entire world is admirably written from its flora and fauna to its back history. What is required for survival on Spatterjay makes Bear Grylls look thoroughly wimpy. There is nothing sweet or nice about Spatterjay or its inhabitants and is a demonstration of the direction that Sci-Fi has travelled since I stopped reading it all those years ago. He also writes the funkiest androids ever - Roll over Marvin!
