Michael Zuckoff found a story in some old newspapers and periodicals about a plane crash in a remote part of New Guinea a the end of WWII. He writes about a trip that started out as an excursion to a hidden valley and ended up in a plane crash. The book tells the story of those who survived and how they got out. Having read Unbroken (survival tale) and State of Wonder (jungle story) this summer I approached Lost in Shangri-La with some reserve. I had had enough of plane crashes, brutal natives, snakes, man eating insects, etc. for a while. I was pleasantly surprised. Zuckoff has made the most of a good material and brought to life some wonderful characters. Despite the crash and the jungle, it is mostly a feel good story.

You ever notice how almost every review you’ll read of a Joan Didion book calls her “intelligent,” or says that she writes “intelligent prose”? That must get to you. No wonder all of her heroines take pills. It’s true, though, she does have an awful big brain for such a little lady. And yeah, L.A. is scary, and there isn’t really anyone who conveys that better than her…except maybe Philip K. Dick, who isn’t literally writing about L.A., but come on. But, I don’t know, as good as the technique is here, as cool and interesting and cutting as the writing is, I still found it a little whiny and trivial and frustrating at times. But that’s probably my fault - I have no doubt that’s because I’m not able to grasp the impact it must have had when it first came out, how shocking it must have been, how our mothers and their friends probably passed this around and the sense of deliverance they probably experienced. I’m not saying it’s a case of “how far we’ve come,” as probably the fact that we’re now able to talk about these things more upfront-ly and with less direct punishment doesn’t translate to the majority of women in this country, but maybe that’s why it’s largely unpleasant to read – the arguments she’s making are old arguments, we still don’t have any solutions, so rehashing them is just depressing and futile. Whereas "Slouching Towards Bethlehem" was like an epic, devastating requiem to California and the ‘60s, "Play it as it Lays" is more like a really good Elliot Smith song. You recognize it’s good, the first three times you listen to it you feel like it’s maybe the cleverest, saddest shit out there, but then you kind of stop listening to it; the place of pain and toxicity from which it emerged, and the fact that it’s a little too close to home is too much to have in your life and thoughts on a regular basis.

A brilliant crime novel, made even more interesting by being written from the perspective of a psychologist and parent as opposed to the usual detective main character. I loved the interweaving storylines and complex characters, and the downright nasty villains make it an even more gripping read. I'll definitely be looking into more of this author's novels.

Odd book. Ann Rule was commissioned to write a book about the killings in Washington. Months later the likeliest suspect turned out to be her friend Ted Bundy. She follows the story through until his electrocution 15 years later. Ted Bundy has touched my life in some tenuous ways. My friend from high school was in the Chi Omega house where he killed two women. She is mentioned in the book. Another woman I worked with in South Carolina had lived next door to the person from whom Ted stole his escape car. Ted Bundy was in prison ~ 60 miles from where we were working in the Swamp. And now I know he grew up in Tacoma & was probably already killing women when I was an infant there.

In this book Mercy gets herself into deep trouble with the local vampires. The suspense of this book is really well done. There is the realization that Samuel is more pack than mate. That she wants to be Adam's mate, and she becomes after some dire circumstances bound to the vampire Stefan. She's a busy girl in this book, gaining the unwanted attention of the only (and seriously dangerous) vampire in Spokane where she goes to help her college friend Amber with a particularly annoying ghost. She has to overcome this vampire's control and escape from the cage she's in at his home. She gets some help from another prisoner "the Oakman" who is a fae that the vampire has kept prisoner for many years. She also has to contend with animosity over Adam making her "pack". They didn't think a coyote could even be pack. I'm really excited to see what will happen next in this series and thankfully I only have to wait a few months!

An easy, breezy read, but in a very different way than Maguire's other books. With it's northern small town setting and the eccentric characters that inhabit it, kind of reminded me of Monsters of Templeton - though I loved that book and just give this one a more lukewarm 2.5 stars or so.
