Evy Varley's marriage to Rogan Chantry is all she had hoped it would be–until she finds out that she is pregnant with a honeymoon baby. Fearing that Rogan won’t allow her to travel while she is expecting, Evy plots to keep her pregnancy secret in order to accompany him to South Africa. Her thoughts are not only for her husband, but Evy is determined to travel to Bulawayo, the new mission station of Dr. Jakob van Buren–the one man who can help Evy to finally clear her mother’s name. After she and Rogan set out to sea, however, Evy discovers that she has gone too far in her deceit, and the damage to her marriage may be irreversible. Matters only worsen in Africa, where malaria, murder, and an African uprising all take their toll–and where Rogan and Evy must fight not only for their love, but also for their very lives.

This book was so sweet and exactly what the followers of this series wanted to read. After all the problems and issues that Nick & Sam had to overcome it was lovely to finally see them married and so happy on their special day. I loved it and can't wait to get on with the next in the series Fatal Flaw

I know I'm doing it wrong, but I tend to skip past most of the pictures, even in a graphic novel. (Yes, I also consider most songs inserted into movies to be filler that I'd rather just fast forward through.) I get that the pictures are part of the format, but unless I really concentrate, I'll blow past them without even realizing it. The previous paragraph does, in fact, relate to this review. I almost gave this book just two stars and said "well, that's a series I'm done with," but the last chapter changed that. Up until then, my impression of the book was (1) oh, look, another page of wordless fighting pictures (reference paragraph 1) and (2) I cannot tell these characters apart!!! But in the last chapter this book showed enough promise that I'm going to (1) push my rating up that fraction of a point necessary to make the final calculation round up to 3 stars and (2) not simply return -- unread -- the next two books in the series (which I already have checked out from the library).

Nearly a 5 star rating for me. I found this fascinating. It was almost like a side show that I just could not look away from. Slightly disturbing, yet entertaining and appealing none the less. Caution should be used for sensitive readers--there are graphic scenes. But the telling of traveling circus life was compelling. I enjoyed the interplay between past and present story lines for Jacob.
I love every Sookie Stackhouse novel... i have not been disappointed yet. Every one of them is mysterious and keeps you on your toes til the end.

Pohl creates an exciting universe. Space explorers find an abandon station that has ships on it. The ships cannot be figured out, but they can be launched. Each goes to a predetermined destination which is unknown to the travelers. It goes and comes back. Along the way they learn more and more ... An alien race is hiding from a predator race that is exterminating life in the universe. Genocide on a grand scale. They have master concpts of physics and are hiding in a black hole. Learn about black holes and other phenomena in this great exploration adventure story. This is the first book in what became a series. Of course it gets tired around the third novel.
I was surprisingly not impressed with this book. John Updike is generally creative and descriptive, but this book seemed to me a collection of cliches about medieval Denmark: the woman who feels trapped by her role, the younger brother jealous of the successful older one (they're even dark and blond, respectively), the novelty of objects from far-away countries, the isolation of royalty who are closest to their personal servants, tiresome elderly advisers - the list goes on. I had expected him to really take this prequel he's created to a Hamlet level, but there's nothing in here of the play's dark themes, it's deep questions of right and wrong, or its complicated characters. (He's even managed to reduce Ophelia to banality. King Hamlet worries that she's not quite stable, but her one brief appearance shows only normal nervous-teenage-girl behavior with a sort of weird look in her eye. Not that memorable.) I was disappointed that the characters - who he had a chance to develop here, since they're not all strongly defined in the original play - turned out to be totally predictable. He does do a good job of making Claudius a sympathetic character, and a preferable one to King Hamlet, without making you feel that Shakespeare wronged him (he still deserves to die). But there are lots of things here - the fragility that regicide brings to a court, the complicated relationship that Gertrude COULD have had with Hamlet (she avoids him here), and the political climate of Denmark that made Hamlet so indecisive - that he ignored or glossed over. I hate to criticize Updike, but I don't think this is his best work.
