This is a lovely and affecting book. Susan Isaacs creates memorable characters and does fantastic dialogue. This is about Linda Voss, a secretary of German ancestry during WWII who, through various circumstances, goes undercover as a spy in Germany. It was made into a movie with Melanie Griffth, which I always enjoyed, but the book is almost completely different and has so much more to it. I highly recommend it.

Meh-I didn't love the book, and I can't quite figure out why. It may just not have been the right book for me at the right time. It was a well written,vivid portrayal of life during the civil war, highlighting what the opportunities (or lack their of) that were available for women at the time. It also included lots of interesting information about the state of medicine at the time. The book received a star review from SLJ, Booklist, and even Kirkus--so just because I didn't love it doesn't mean that it's not a good book. I wouldn't hesitate to put it on a historical fiction bib--I think it's a good recommendation for middle school students--I think anyone much younger then that would be confused by all of the medical and scientific vocabulary that is included.

I enjoyed this book. The subject matter is a little disturbing and the descriptions are a little too detailed but overall it was a good read. The characters are interesting and their interactions are true to life. The fact that the book is based in Sweden was a little confusing at first but the author helps you along the way. I liked it enought to start reading the second book in the trilogy.

I made it to page 140...after that many pages, I still did not really care much for the story. I just can't get into it! Hopefully really soon! UPDATE: I've finished now. I just can't seem to start a book and leave it unfinished. It ended up okay, but I gave it 3 stars because it took me so long to even care to read it...like halfway through! Plus, it's a bit too dark for me.
