I love the world created in the Black Jewels Trilogy by Bishop. Not only does this book explore the continuing dynamics and journey of Janelle, Daemon, and Saeton (my all time favorite characters) but I was equally invested in the new characters. In this book you learn how a true court is formed and learn that despite the fact that Janelle had some sparkly jewels and some impressive powers a Queen's true strength is not dependent on the darkness of her Jewel. Bishop makes her women beautiful by focusing on their strengths and not their outer beauty.

Ever wonder why fairy tales follow a set pattern? Ever get annoyed by the predictability? Then, this is the book for you. A fairy tale that breaks tradition.

This may be an original book as a gay novel, but as a fantasy novel it really isn't. It's a fairly standard dystopia.

In one way, this book gives me insight into the inner thoughts of the psychedelic-era-style belief systems that allow for instantaneous communication across the universe, telepathy, previous lives, and mental transcendence to different realities. But in another way, I'm left just as baffled as before. Lilly does explain his experiences and some of the beliefs that surround them in a rather straightforward way, but I still don't feel like anything is actually explained. He leaves open a lot of room for skepticism, saying that he's a skeptic himself, and essentially remains agnostic on the existence of actual higher dimensional beings and realities or whatever it is he describes that happens to him when he mediates himself into a blissful plane of existence. All he knows is that, when he follows these procedures, this is what he experiences, and more people should do it because it's pretty great. Somehow it doesn't all fit together. And what I mean by that is, I already have a framework for understanding reality and he doesn't try to explain it using the vocabulary that I'm used to, so it just sounds like garbage to me.

I loved this book. I read it over a holiday weekend and couldn't put it down. I have passed it on to a couple of friends since. Everyone I talk to has different thoughts on this book but it does make you think.

A fascinating look at the crucial part our Special Forces played in the initial war in Afghanistan. The sacrifices that these men made were monumental. Their experiences were like stepping back hundreds of years in time but fighting an enemy with modern weapons of war !! The idea of inserting a handful of highly trained guys (some of whom were proficient in the language) into the wilds of Afghanistan, joining forces with the Northern Alliance, and fighting a war on their terms was initially successful beyond anybody's hopes. The final outcome remains to be seen as politics and more conventional processes of "keeping the peace" are utilized. I pray that the people of Afghanistan will be able to hold on to the fragile victory our guys helped them win against the Taliban.
