I was anxious to see how it all turned out when it arrived in the mail yesterday, that I stayed up til 1am finishing it (most of the reading was when the boys were sleeping). I was torn the whole time between who I was rooting for in the wonderfully crafted love triangle of Katniss, Peeta, & Gale. It was entertaining and I could never anticipate what would happen next. LOVED this series & I was moved to tears more times than I could count. I loved how it ended & can't wait for more books by this author!

"Gathering Blue" is the second book of the "The Giver Trilogy" by renowned Young Adult author Lois Lowry. As described on the author’s website: "In this speculation on the nature of the future of human society, life in Kira's community is nasty, brutish, and, for the ill or disabled, short." [www.loislowry.com] This book, while not necessarily sequential, is a companion to Lowry's 1994 Newbery Award-winning classic "The Giver." It follows similar themes of a primitive future world: a dystopian society with its hidden agendas; and wise & gifted children caught in the web of their world’s harsh yet convoluted cultural ways. We sense the novel's overall foreboding tone with its first words: "Mother?" There was no reply. She hadn't expected one. Her mother had been dead now for four days, and Kira could tell that the last of her spirit was drifting away. ...." Immediately we are introduced to a contrasting world to the high-tech society of "The Giver" - Kira's world is instead primitive; survival of the fittest is the law of the land. Kira, who was born with a disabled leg, should have been left to the wild beasts at birth. But due to other circumstances - her mother's resolve; Kira's own supernatural gift; and advocates on the city council - her life takes an alternate course. "Gathering Blue", like the more well-known "Giver," is certainly dark throughout. However, there are great moments of hope. This book does not reveal such controversial themes; nor are the characters as complex. Much as Kira's world is more simple than in "Giver", so are Lowry's characters. Some are good; some are evil. And many are just existing. Thus, while well-written and innovative, "Gathering Blue" does not leave such a lasting resonance as the "Giver" might. Additionally, unlike the transparent Jonas in "The Giver," we do not relate as well to Kira, whose emotions remain rather subdued and reflective throughout the tale. That saying, Lowry's ability to craft a new world; sympathetic characters; and a hint of the magical, is well-deserving of her public praise. She is considered a pioneer of dystopian young adult fiction; and as that genre has seemingly exploded among today's youth, it was helpful to me, as a future librarian, to see another example of the genre's beginnings.

Brilliantly written and a really good read! Jennifer seems to be able to remember what it was like for her as a 5-10 year old and the mysteries of the adult world. Her story is one of tenacity, will and perseverance rarely seen in such a young age. Highly recommended.

Fablehaven Brandon Mull 351 pages Young Adult Kendra and Seth are trying to protect Fablehaven from an evil witch and demon. The setting doesn't contribute to the story since Fablehaven has been around for centuries. Protagonists: Kendra and Seth, brother and sister Antagonist: Evil witch named Muriel Kendra and Seth go to their grandpa's for vacation. Seth breaks the rules and goes into the forest and he finds and he finds the witch Muriel. Their grandpa finds out and they are punished for going into the forest. Later they begin to prepare for Midsummer's night, where all the monster come out. Seth breaks the rules again and opens the bedroom window. The demons get into the house and everyone is kidnapped except for Kendra and Seth. Kendra and Seth go out for the next few days to find their family member and friends. They figure our that their grandma is the pet chicken in their room and they change her back by taking her to the witch. But by doing this they release the witch from her prison. Now they have to stop the witch from releasing and evil demon called Bahumat and save Falehaven. I like this book because of all the fictional characters. 1. In flawless synchronization, the cloud of fairies swopped, diving toward him. pg. 130 2. The child was replaced by a leering goblin with yellow slits for eyes, and puckered nose, and face like a dried cantaloupe. pg. 173 Those who mess with the rules will be punished. The one thing that. would set this book apart from the rest would be the amount of fictional characters in it.

A school shooting, or, a shooting that happened to take place in a school. Three friends, great character and story development. I found the ending a little disappointing but still satisfying and interesting. What a great writer.

This is a young adult serious written by a friend of mine. They fast reads as they are kids fantasy, but they are really good. I recommend reading this to your kids or getting it for them to read.
I was disappointed with Red is for Remembrance after having liked the others, despite their creepiness, so much. It just seemed to drag on, the characters that told a lot of the story didn't really have a place in your care until the end. It was just a little bit of a let down.
