I'm not quite sure whether I liked this book or not. For the first half of the book, I can't make up my mind who I found more annoying: the father or the son. Of course, when the reason came to light, it was completely understandable why and how their relationship was the way it is. I rarely read books of middle eastern culture so, despite the heartaches, I did enjoy it especially when it ended with hope (slight as it was, it's still hope). My mouth was salivating at each mention of food... kebobs and korma, etc...
I have say that I liked Wicked a great deal more than this follow up book, but it was fun nonetheless. The author really does a great job with developing his characters and painting a colorful fantasy. The only reason I gave it three stars was because I couldn't identify with the main character Liir and his self-destructive behavior.

Loved this book - one of the most creative books I think I've ever read, and definitely one of the best.
A story within a story within a story. Some great allusions to classic myth and other stories. Atwood's narrator, Iris, along with her sister Laura, are frank and real characters. Only through Laura's novel, also titled "The Blind Assasin" does the read slowly discover the horrible tragedies and disfunctions of a wealthy family growing up in Toranto during the Second World War. Atwood pulls readers in with the account of Laura's accidental death/suicide from page one, then leaders you onward to discover the reasons that prompted this event. I loved it. A book that delivers a sweet taste of revenge.

I am just starting to read this. It looks very interesting. I will let you know how it goes.
First, let me start off by saying that I'm not sure that I read Jane Eyre or at least I don't remember reading it, so I can't comment on the relevance of this modernization of the story. Either way, judging this story on its own merit, I don't have many positive things to say. The characterizations fell flat and I never cared about the characters or was completely drawn into the story... at all. I did want to know who was locked in the attic and why, so I did finish the story (hence two stars instead of one), but I just never really cared about Jane, and couldn't understand, at all, why she fell in love with Mr. Rathburn. Her realization that she loved Mr. Rathburn was just random. And as for Mr. Rathburn, I thought he was a narcissistic selfish prick with no redeeming qualities whatsoever. When he declared his supposed "love" for Jane, it was completely unbelievable and I was WTF'ing through the rest of it.

Maybe it's just my interest in the subject matter, but this is really well-written -- clear and engaging.
