I've read this three times, still love it, and will probably read it again. Like most soviet era novels it helps to get a copy with good footnotes because there are a lot of references to events in russian/ soviet history that those of us who do not possess Big Russian Souls will not understand with out help. I like to think of it as soviet magical realism since it includes a giant, bipedal, talking black cat; a broomride over Moscow; inflammable manuscripts and the Devil himself.

A good friend recommended this quite a while ago and I finally got around to reading it. I both liked it and hated it at the same time. I really enjoyed the historical parts of the book but found the actual story leaving me thinking, "How much more can one person endure?" only to dive into another tragedy.

John Donne was a modern man. He is full of contradictions, faults, neurotic if not psychotic guilt, confusion, love, hope, and faith. To me, he embodies the Anglican Christian, a role-model. Absolutely every aspect of his life resonates with me. It is sad that there are only echoes of his wife, Ann More. There were so many reasons that this marriage was wrong, marginally legal, scandalous, and a professional drag, yet it remained passionate and sensual. His poetry to his wife indicates a unity of selves in an almost cosmic sense. I must say on a completely personal note, that even though Thomas Merton brought me to Christ, it has been John Donne who has kept me a Christian. Donne's humanity inspires me to hope for more. Our confused and sometimes pitiful lives can embrace great deeds and good deeds too. And along the way there is a God who won't let go.

aku menemukan banyak persahabatan dan cita-cita, bagaimana mewujudkan mimpi, berani menjalani relationship. Makna pertemanan yang sebenarnya. Bagaimana memberi dukungan sepenuhnya ketika salah seorang sahabat tervonis HIV positif, bagaimana bersikap saat mengetahui seorang sahabat, suami sahabat mempunyai affair (yang ternyata tak pernah terjadi). Bikin nangis di akhirnya, soalnya tiba2 aku bayangin klo punya temen yang punya sakit parah (well i already have sih) walaupun cuman bacaan ringan tapi banyak pelajaran yang bisa diambil deh!!!
