I won this book from First Reads. I really enjoyed this book. I found it to be a well written telling of Hemingway's Paris years, his marriage to his first wife Hadley and his struggles in his early career. I feel that Paula McLain did a good job making her reader feel as though they were in Paris in the 1920s and part of the interesting circle of friends that Ernest and Hadley were in. I have read "A Moveable Feast" and found this to be an interesting point of view of many of the same stories. I will be recommending this to others.

I didnt care at all either way about this relationship. I didn't mind Daniel but Carina is just too much. She's annoying and didn't seen to have too much depth at all. I didnt even remember her name after finishing the book 2 minutes before. Sad because I really enjoyed the first two of the series.

This is a great book. Set in 1938 India, it tells the story of an 8 yr old widow, including fascinating things about the culture. Historical Fiction.

Perhaps I should not read books on faith. Lamott spends the first part of the book explaining how bad she was - drugs, alcohol, affairs etc. She overdid the details and I thought this is a St. Paul or St. Augustine conversion moment. - "bad, bad, bad, ... Jesus.... good, good" and the good is supposed to be so much better because of the evil. So when Jesus slipped into her life...I was not surprised. But Lamott does tell funny stories. I love the literary references and her metaphors. She admits being self absorbed. Too true! However, her humility and humanity come through and there are many learning/touching moments. We had a great book group discussion because of this book. Would I ever read a Lamott book again? Probably not. I am not sorry I read this one even if it became tedious at the end.

Though not much is happening, it's a recommendable book with much philosphy in it.

Pretty good story. From back cover: "A starter marriage hadn't been the first act Mary Ellen Black had meant to script for herself, but bowing out provided hard-won perspective: The most important things in life were not things at all, but the people she held dear. In her case, the lovable eccentrics she called family, the ones who were more than ready to support her leading role-if only she'd step into the spotlight. So now Mary Ellen's drafted act two-her return home-and she's pretty sure she's ready for the performance of Her Life, starring a strong, single mother of two. She's all dressed up and ready to take on the world...and take back the woman she was meant to be."

** spoiler alert ** Miyata loses his match with Mashiba because of an injury from where Mashiba cheated by stepping on his foot. Having lost, Miyata apologizes to Ippo for not being able to make it to the final round to fight him. Ippo is heartbroken and injures his fists the next day by excessively punching the sandbag. Because Mashiba's arm is 20 cm longer than Ippo's, Ippo works on his dart skills by doing a lot of running while his fists heal. In the meantime, Mashiba reveals even more of his bad personality. Ippo, mistaking the girl he has a crush on for one of Miyata's fans, comforts her by saying that Miyata wouldn't have lost if his opponent hadn't cheated. She becomes angry and it turns out she's Mashiba's younger sister. Fuji comes to see Ippo and tells him more about the Mashiba siblings, how their parents were killed three years ago in an accident and now he and his sister are on their own. Ippo still can't forgive him for cheating and wants revenge. The volume closes with them both in the ring, about to begin the first round. I liked this volume. I think I enjoy the training scenes even more than the fight scenes, because that's where you really get to see Ippo become stronger. Mashiba really gets on my nerves though. Like Ippo, I can't sympathize with him at all, he cheated and could have ruined Miyata's career. If taking care of his sister is so high on his mind, he shouldn't be boxing anyway.
