I was disappointed with this book. I loved The Piano Teacher and Wonderful Wonderful Times. This was a bit of a dud. For starters, it was repetitive. Mostly, the woman's husband just hit her and had humiliating sex with her. Rape might be a better word. I get that she has issues with male/female relations, but this was just sorta absurd. Despite all the graphic sex, it was even kinda boring. I was drawn in to her other novels and thought about them for weeks after I read them. I couldn't stop talking about them. This one, I put down, had a stiff drink, and went on my slightly less merry way.

Definitely a lesser work than Fruits Basket but still cute.

Even more "unnutritious" than the Sisterhood books, but once again, they are very good reads for their demographic. It's junk lit. What can I say?
My 11 year old son asked me to read this, as he'd started it and was struggling a bit, and wanted to know if it was worth persevering with. I will be telling him yes! An unusual book, and initially hard to get into, it picks up in the second half. Thecharacters are interesting, and the setting and 'history' is imaginative. Different from most children/youth's book, I would recommend it. Will have to read the next one in the series now though, as this was definitely the introduction to the story to come.

This is one of mine that is usually within easy reach. Mitford! Waugh! Mitford and Waugh WRITING TO EACH OTHER. There is a paralyzingly nasty remark about someone like Cyril Connolly on every other page. What's not to love?

Beautiful. I would expect nothing less from C.S. Lewis.

This book blew me away in what it exposed and how Pollan went about it. He's a great writer, and I really gained a lot from this book. It got me down off my high horse, for one thing. Made me realize what a loaded issue corn is, not to mention this whole ethanol business.

Hrmmmmmm...well, I was very keen to finally read a Dave Eggers novel, after hearing much praise by several friends. Maybe I should've started with Staggering Work Of A... cuz I wasn't too excited with this book. I am a bit unsure how I feel about Eggers. Sometimes, if in the right mood, I kinda like his writing style. Other times I can't stand it and want to throw the book down (and do). This book started off well - I was into it, I thought it was hip & weird & tangential in a good way. Then if kinda flattened out. At one point I hadn't read from it on over a week, not a good sign. And then I told myself- ok , just finish Velocity so you can move on to another book, dammit! Still...there were certain beautifully crafted sentences and certain exceptionally well-captured feelings and moments. I just don't know if I'll read him again - well, yes, i probably will. Maybe this wasnt his best. any Eggers fans have any feedback??

Quite obviously a first novel- not a great work of literature but entertaining. Everyone seems to go on about how empowering this book is to women, but I found that element of the novel limited in scope, since the only women who are successful completely reject men and those who don't are destroyed by their heterosexual realtionships. I like boys, damnit!

Probably one of the better reference books for mystery writers, or those who are just interested in Police Procedure, and how things are done.
