This bad-ass play is going to be in Pro Rata's 10/11 season!

Another Jonathan Spence book. This one attempts to show the way that China has been percieved by "the west" from earliest historical references to present. If I remember correctly it begins with Marco Polo. It does a fairly good job, it's not particularly exciting but it was worth digesting.

This is a great book. A mystery set in an alternative universe where it's 1985 in England, the Crimean War is still ongoing, Wales is self governing, dodos are back from the dead, and literary crimes are one of the worst offences. Very different, the humour is very dry, and an light hearted read. Very good.

Extremely charming. I know myself, now and when I was a younger kid...I would have wanted to be Menolly. I intend to read the rest of the series. It's beautiful and has some deeper messages for the human being.

There's a lot of detail about Spielberg in this book and I read it on and off for a couple of years when I was actually interested in the guy. I suppose that a biography is good if you are interested in the subject, but I don't think it would be all that compelling if you didn't give a damn.

His style sometimes seems unexpressive, but somehow he pulls you in and attaches you to characters that you would normally hate.

Was up all night finishing this. Once I got into it, I couldn't put it down. It reminded me a little of Twilight but with a totally different dynamic. And no vampires. And dragons. It ended on a cliff hanger but I have the sequel on the way so hopefully I'll be able to get started on that soon. If you loved Twilight, go for this one. It has that star-crossed swoony thing going for it :)

This probably defines literary escapism....mainly because it incorporates innocence and beautiful scenery. I can't say the story line was rocket science (and slightly predictable with a pretty weak plot and Austenesque style romance) but the idea of a commune of well read, liberal minded, progressive war survivors was quite appealing. Any time I ever read a book of letters I begin by thinking that I just can't do this (Dangerous Liaisons for example)...However, by the third/fourth letter it feels so natural and I wonder why there aren't more letter (popular) style books out there. Juliet's English and caustic sense of humor was funny/endearing. All the other characters were predictably flawless (anybody odious was, it felt, kicked off the Island). Of course I loved the weather...it was exactly how I'd imagine the Channel Islands and it seemed to suit a writer like Juliet. All in all, probably a really good beach/vacation/rainy/sick in bed read.

there were times I found the book predictable. However, the story was strong enough that it didn’t bother me one bit. In Catching Fire there are also times I knew what would happen next, but also more instances when I had no idea what to expect. An interesting balance, but still great nonetheless. Catching Fire is a superb follow-up to The Hunger Games. I give Catching Fire five of five stars. :bd
