I borrowed this book from a friend who's reading it for her East Asian Studies class. It was interesting and very well written. I didn't much care for the writing style, having read too many books written like that. However, I did enjoy the various themes that ran throughout the two stories and might read more by this author in the future.

Awesome book. I am in love with this author. Plague, influenza epidemics, a little science fiction, a little time travel, and characters that are sufficiently robust I cared enough to cry at one point. How did I miss this Hugo-winning Nebula-winning writer? There were a few comic moments. I gave it 4 stars rather than 5 for two reasons: first, it's still just fun fiction and not great literature, and second, there were a couple of characters -- like Mr Gilchrist -- a little too thinly drawn from type (though I've known a few of these types). But I would give it 4.5, if that were an option on Goodreads. Very few books keep me up past midnight reading. The best thing about discovering a new writer (a writer new to one's self) is that it is like starting to explore a new country. I have books and books ahead of me, now, and nothing but eagerness to jump into the next one.
Be patient with this book, it's worth the read! Eragon's world has been carefully laid out and created into something believable. Though it may take time to get through, if you enjoy Lord of the Rings, definitely give this book a chance!

Not *quite* what I was expecting from a pseudo-cyberpunk post-apocalyptic dreamlike novel... very different but it's Murakami so no matter what it's about you're bound to at least enjoy reading it. It took me awhile to understand that some chapters would alternate between the main character and his shadow... or at least that's what I gathered from it.
please read it,you will like it

BORING. Period. Not what I was expecting at all. I thought we were supposed to find out about Henrietta, not the biology of cells. Don't get me wrong, there were interesting parts in the biology stuff, but I wanted to get to know Henrietta. All I found out about her was that she was a kind woman who loved to cook and her husband slept around a lot. The author even mentions at one point in a conversation she's having on the phone with H's daughter that she's been talking to other family members and has learned the most awesome stories...well why didn't you share those stories with us?!?! I wasted a week on this book. :-/
I am never disappointed by this author. A good quick read.
Argues Left has sold out the working class/poor by focusing on the politics of sex and identity. He's right, but fails to convince (me, at least) that we can't care equally for both.
