The Face On The Milk Carton by Caroline B. Cooney is a book about a young girl named Janie Johnson who thinks that she has been kidnapped by her parents. She is allergic to milk but one day, she steals some milk from her best friend Sarah-Charlotte so that she could taste something different that day. However, that completely changed her life. She saw a picture of a young girl on the side of the milk carton. The girl had been kidnapped and it was an appeal for people who had seen her. Janie recognizes the picture -- it was her. It is not the face she recognizes, but the dress. Janie starts to suspect that her parents had kidnapped her. Initially, she thought she could tell no one. However, she meets Reeve, her neighbor, whom she thought is trustworthy. Reeve eventually becomes Janie’s boyfriend and helps Janie in many ways. Eventually, she finds out that her parents did not even know about her being a kidnapped child. Their daughter Hannah left the family to join a cult and then she brings Janie home, claiming that Janie is her daughter. After that, Janie is left with Hannah’s parents while she goes back to the cult. Janie keeps this secret to herself but eventually, her parents find out and everyone suspects that it was probably Hannah who kidnapped Janie. There is a sequel to this book titled Whatever Happened To Janie. You have to read that book to find out the conclusion. But I don't care whether I read it or not. After all, I'm not planning to buy that one. One advantage of having a cheap second-hand book is that you don't have to worry if it was a good or a bad read and you'll not bear any regrets in buying it. I bought this book in Booksale last summer when I'm on the verge of having no book to buy (I always make sure that every time I go to any bookstore, I have to purchase at least one book). This book is very cheap and it only costs 30 pesos. However, I have learned some bits of information while reading this book. First, I never knew that putting missing children's picture on milk cartons really exist, but I'm not sure if it was only in the US. Second, I never knew that there is such a word as "daymare" (which was obviously the opposite of "nightmare"). To sum it all up, the story was as scary as it was disappointing. The end seems to be lacking description and did not make sense. I don't know why, but it was frustrating in an unexplainable kind of way. I rate this book with two stars. It was okay. For me, there was no surprising and exciting part in this novel. It was just a plain young adult fiction and a perfect tool to kill the time.
