This is Kim Stanley Robinson at his absolute best - his most lyrical, his most impassioned, and his most engaging. These interrelated novels depict three different possible futures for California: ravaged by war, an urban wasteland, an ecotopia. Gorgeous and provocative.
Wasn't sure how much I'd like this when I started it, but loved the last quarter or so of the book... pretty pumped for the next installment now. Full review forthcoming.

I love Flannery O'Connor. She was such an amazing writer of the 20th Century. I got a book very similar to this one but it is not in print anymore that has many of the same short stories as this book. I have read a few and I have really loved them, especially "A Good Man is Hard to Find."
An engrossing and fully realized story of a young girl who suffers at the hands of her stepmother, yet is able to find solace in books and eventually overcome her harsh physical and emotional abuse. This is an excellent choice for readers who enjoyed "Falling Leaves" by Adeline Yen Mah.
The jacket blurb reveals that there is no mystery in this mystery - it is made clear who did the murders fairly early on. So the main question is whether two of the characters escape (from Sweden) or not. Most of the characters other than the police are immigrants or foreign visitors. That aspect makes this more interesting than if these characters were all Swedes (and is central to the story). At certain points the detectives seem almost secondary to the story - I don't think I care for that approach. Otherwise very engaging.
A really clever pop culture memoir about Gen X and one man's obsession with Guided by Voices. As a fellow Gen Xer and GBV fan, I loved Seller's random musical references (Terence Trent D'Arby anyone?) and indie rock rants. However, I must provide a warning: This book contains footnotes. Many, many, MANY footnotes. At first they were funny, then they became irritating and distracting. You might want to skip them at first, then go back and reread. But don't miss the appendix at the end. The lists are priceless.

Clive Barker is my favorite gay man ever. Well my favorite famous don't-know-in-real-life gay man ever. Seriously. These books are super scary! Yipee!

This should be a 2.5, because the writing itself (outside of plot) is delicious, and the ideas are rich, and Gaiman's mind has such an amazing amalgamation of ideas that you have plenty to think about whenever you read his work. However, his amazing amalgamation also leads to random plot tangents that never seem to link back up. I felt like when he wrote certain chapters he was on a bad acid trip. The second chapter, which is also incredibly graphic, doesn't really link to anything in the rest of the story! The way he wraps up the plot at the end feels really contrived, and while the world is vivid and rich and supposed to be quite whacked out, it doesn't need to bleed over that much into plot. I felt like the main character actually became more flat as the book went along to the point of disappearing up until the last 10 pages or so. Some great ideas, but the delivery falls flat (or explodes in a confusing and variegated mess).
