A dense, allusive, cynical yet humorous look at mankind's obsession with its own demise. Inside you will find giant adenoids, a trained attacking octopus, a plastic with erectile properties, various orgies, conscious light bulbs and kazoos, the John E. Badass (a toilet ship), paranoia, an asylum full of psychics, and a cast of characters engaged in double and triple-crosses who eventually lose track of who's controlling who.

It was - okay. Horrendous art but strong story. I reviewed it in depth over here: http://tinyurl.com/6j9l88t

This book is something else. At first, I am shocked by the parents, shocked that there are people like that. Then comes a feeling of being shocked at how normal (all but Maureen) the children turned out, and that they had so much love and compassion for their parents. And then following closely on the heels of that I keep wondering, which parent was worse? The father I can almost understand, his issues, while very real seem sort of simple to recognize. The mother on the other hand? I cannot fathom what would drive a woman to act that way. I have to admit to a fair amount of skimming, because I could tell early on that there were certain experiences in her life that I just did not want to have the images in my head for. I got enough of the picture just from skimming those parts. But mostly, I can't believe the ability of this family to forgive, again and again and again.

cheesy title and writing is mediocre, but i thought she gave a great examination of the development of a charter school from the very beginning
Story of a fictional advertising agency in London trying to win the Coca-Cola account. The entire book is written through e-mail correspondence from each employee. Amazingly funny.

The story paces slowly, something I felt I couldn't bear at first. But as more chapters are read, the better it gets. Sheila Burnford successfully creates the logic of an incredible story, how a Siamese cat can befriend an old terrier and a young Labrador so much that they are inseparable companions in such a long journey. For the soft-hearted it can make your eyes teary to read the closing chapter, but I found that I'm not that soft :-) Oh, but I learn quite some things about Siamese cat, terrier, and Labrador species - their ancestors and natural dispositions - from it, which is informative.
This series has grown on me. It's a great series for boys who like adventure stories. I think I'll finish the series. I believe we're up to 9? I have a few books left, then!

Exquisitely written, like all of DiCamillo's children's books. I understand that the movie was not very good, but the writing is delicate, sensitive, and each chapter has an almost poetic start and finish. Symbolism is clear and traced nicely throughout the story.
