This is a very bland retelling of the famous legend of Tristan and Isolde, aimed at teen readers. I work with young readers every week and they deserve so much more than this type of writing. Not to mention there is no need to water down a beautiful, ancient legend like this. The writing, ideas, and situations are so simplified that this book could be read by a very young reader if the context were appropriate for that age. Traditional legends within cultures withstand the test of time partly because they provide complex ideas of life, things that we identify with in our own complex lives. The art of these legends is that they continue to be told with a beauty and richness that we also need within our own lives. The Tristan/Isolde relationship is also oversimplified here, with the author resorting to saying that Tristan makes Isolde "hot." Maybe that doesn't mean what it sounds like it means, but if not, why use that term? Sorry to say, but this is not one I could recommend.

For an overview, wikipedia does a good job describing the themes, but don't read too much of the "Plot" section if you want to read the book. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Choc.... I did not appreciate the male self gratification parts, but they were not explicit. This is not a book for young readers, but is an excellent examination of school life, and even our society in general. How does a group become so "powerful" that they dominate the majority? Jerry never really ever intended to "disturb the universe," nor did he really understand what that meant until he received the backlash from the Vigils. The ending was perfect for this type of novel. No answers, No resolution.

David Hall does a fine job calling the church back to its rich heritage. It will be a grand day when evangelical Christianity notices that it stands on the shoulders of giants.

The Mitford series is an old friend. Each time I read it I feel as if I just visited old friends!
It would have been very easy with this novel to tip over into the maudalin. Lasser did a wonderful job of dealing with both the way a death changes everything and the need to move forward in life.

برای بچه هایی که می توانند به مسایل بیندیشند و تحلیل کنند و همه ی آنهایی که از خواندن افسانه های قدیمی ایرانی لذت می برند.
This was a great read but just sort of ends mid-stride. I know he's working on a further volume, but I always am a bit disappointed when a book piddles out. Poetry flashback I guess, but I hope when it does end, it resolves like a mothra-farquhar. Worth the read though. Really funny and he does an admirable job of creating a situation in which, yep, this is how YOU would react.

A good read, could see the parallels between the characters and the Bush's lives. I will likely read the biography written about Laura Bush that influenced this author.
