The Way We Fall by Megan Crewe is a book that imagines would happen if a relatively isolated community were to suffer an outbreak of a new and unknown virus. How would the government react? How would members of the community deal with the situation? What’s nice about the novel is that because the story is set on an island, quarantining people actually becomes a plausible solution. When that happens of course, emotions get heightened and the best and worst in people are brought out. Although Crewe escalates the situation gradually to increase tension, I never felt a sense of urgency to turn the pages as quickly as possible. Part of this was because of the slow pacing and part of it was because the book was narrated in the form of diary entries to Leo, Kaelyn’s ex-best friend who we learn a little about but only appears right before the abrupt ending. The entries were written obviously after things already happened so it felt a little like I was reading about Kaelyn’s past. This sort of made it hard to completely connect with the characters, and made me feel as if I was watching the action from a distance.

Review posted here: Offbeat Vagabond Wow, this was better than I expected. Thanks to Netgalley, I had the pleasure to add this to my iPod. I must say, I have not had the pleasure of reading Gail Z. Martin's first series, Chronicles of the Necromancer, but I see why she is so popular in this genre. It was truly epic with all sort of supernatural beings that made it quite refreshing. I have never come across a series that was an epic fantasy that is full of zombies, demons, vampires, werewolves and more. It was 600 pages of greatness. The Sworn is about individuals who come together to try and take on a group we know as Black Robes, that want to raise an ancient cult known as the Destroyer. They want to raise it so they can bring back the old ways of the Winter Kingdoms. But while all of this is happening, the Winter Kingdoms are swarmed with multiple problems. Crops are slowly running low, there is a plague happening that turns people into zombies (or ashtenerath) and there are also demons (or dimmons) being raised by the Black Robes to attack people. Even worse, the Black Robes are capturing vampires and werewolves to sacrifice their blood to the Destroyer. I will not go too much in the details because there are a lot. Each chapter is a different addition to the plot. I love that there isn't just one or two main characters. Everyone is a main character. There were so many subplots that led to the big plot, it was a tad confusing, but I believe that was due to the fact that I just got into this world and haven't read the first series. The Sworn is a spin-off of Chronicles of the Summoner series for those that don't know. I also loved how when the books changed from one character to the next, it is a different world. Each world is full of magic in one way or the other. Whether it be the world of summoning because of King Tris, who has the ability to raise the dead or talk to their ghosts. Or the world of Aidane, the serroquette (a ghost whore), who has the ability to harbor a ghost's spirit and let them live through her (but only for two hours). All their abilities end up playing a huge role in this seemingly inevitable war. I am so regretful for not starting Martin's work earlier, but I definitely intend to. Her work is beautifully written and imaginative. It is full of fantasy, horror, and magic, it was hard not to get engulfed by this book. Actually this book leaves off on a sort of cliffhanger and even though it is a little over 600 pages, I was literally screaming at iPod because I didn't want it to end. So if epic fantasy mixed with vampires, demons and werewolves sounds like your kind of thing, I highly recommend this book to you.

Enjoyable trip to post-WWII Guernsey and the motley characters who befriend the story's heroine. Pretty light reading.

The basis for just about every sci-fi movie involving robots or machines. Very good.

While reading this second book in the Outlander series was exhausting, I found myself once again pulled into 18th century Scotland and the intense action packed life of Jamie and Claire Fraser. Just shy of 1000 pages, DIA is funny, sad, heartwarming, and most of all has a love story that completely wins you over. I was thinking of throwing in my Outlander towel after this one, but the intrigue of Claire going back in time to find her true love that she thought to be dead might put me into book 3. If you can get past the length of the book, it's for sure a well written story that'll be worth your time if you enjoyed Outlander.

Shudderchild by Warren C. Norwood 1987 So I recently found this book while adding a box of old paperbacks to my LibraryThing account. I have read it before but it could have been 20 years ago. Long enough that though the story seemed familiar I had no idea what was going to happen next. Since I have read this book last I have read many other books that fall into that TEOTWAWKI category and must say it was refreshing to read a story of some people in the US after a great destruction, something having to do with plate tectonics and earthquakes, that weren’t eating each other. This is not to say life was easy or everyone got along but cannibalism seems to be the norm in this genre. Another thing that struck me and frankly it may be my mindset was the quest for power by several people most notably the priest. I guess the more things change the more they stay the same. Lastly I liked Norwood’s use old infrastructure and equipment. It makes sense to me that people would use gas, trucks, roads, and airplanes as long as they would make things easier for them, perhaps with less and less frequency but still as long as they could cobble things together.
Who wouldn’t want to read about angels? Smart, funny, protectors, sexy… occasionally they’re BAD GUYS who could turn you into butter with one single look or word… so why wouldn’t read about them? Now we have another history; ‘Unearthly’ takes my breath away when the mystery resolves itself (because I had never been so far away from it). I must say that the last pages were my favorite part. It was difficult for me, at the beginning, to identify with Clara; she’s a child who must wait for her purpose, led by her mother, who is also an angel but stronger than her daughter. I felt that she needed to grow up, that it was the lack of maturity that makes her so unlikeable to me. The love history… Christian? I had always felt him so distant from Clara. This relationship was never meant to be because both of them cannot be themselves in the presence of the other one; they were always so uncomfortable and insincere that I did not enjoy the love story between Christian and Clara (and I do love read about a girl and a boy falling in love). Tucker? I return to the kindergarden when I read about them. I’ll give 3.5 stars to ‘Unearthly’, because the author surprised me at the end of the history, and because this book has a lot of potential. I know that it was her first one, so I hope the second book in the series will not disappoint me. Thanks to NetGalley!!!!!
