The first 30 or so pages were interesting and drew me in. Oh what a poisonous lure that was. The more I read, the more I was half bored, half disgusted at the gratuitous descriptions of violence to underage children, or worse, lurid descriptions of their bodies. I'm not saying you cannot write about bad things and bad people.Similarly, dozens of pages were wasted on describing and redescribing the horrible pain of someone who lost the most precious thing in their life. Unnecessary details of violence simply make the reader into a voyeur. Unnecessary descriptions of pain make the reader into a sadist who enjoyes reading about suffering. The descriptions of the bodies of children going through puberty. Do I really need to know the size and shape of their breasts, their developing sexuality in detail? There are less skeevy ways of describing growing up. After the middle point it was basically melodrama, disjointed pieces of unrelated stories, and an increasingly obvious lack of originality in the idea of afterlife. The kind of afterlife someone would describe if they only gave it a passing thought. The kind of "heaven" that if thought of for more than 5 seconds, would be clearly the worst hell imaginable. The ending was of course illogical and unsatisfying. After dragging along hoping for at least an emotional retribution, instead, the reader is left with the idea that a troubled traumatised soul finds the power to move on after.... having sex with a person they barely knew years ago. The mind boggles.
