This one slipped a bit for me. I still liked it but to be honest I enjoyed the Menzoberranzan (yeah, totally looked that up) sections more than the Drizzt ones. Drizzt has escaped from his family and has been hiding out in the underdark for the last ten years (too long in my opinion). With the panther Guenhwyvar as his only companion he has lost touch with who he was. Acting almost purely on instinct. Desperate to get back into their goddess' favor his family begins to hunt for their rogue noble (better late than never I guess). It's very predictable. Especially to any gamers out there. Wander. Fight. Collect companion. Battle boss character. Not necessarily a bad thing. The first time I read these I was heavily into role playing games (actually that's how I discovered them) and I just loved it. During my reread of Homeland I was a little dismayed by the lack of diversity in the characterization. Very stereotypical. Drow. Evil. No degrees of evil. Of ambition. Most of the characters were much like another. Here there's improvement. It's not great but I did notice a difference. And one of my favorite characters is introduced here. Jarlaxle. The opportunistic Drow mercenary leader. (although why did I hear Zevran from the videogame Dragon Age everytime he spoke) I like these books so I recommend them. If you liked Homeland but not this one I'd still continue. It was kinda weak for me.

** spoiler alert ** I really liked Marian (aka Ninja Marian), couldn't quite stand the way Collins made Laura child-like after her stint of "dying" although I know it was in order for her to be "reborn" so she could eventually marry Hartright, and I liked Count Fosco in a I-love-to-hate-you sort of way until after the Postscript section. Fosco sort of lost his evilness about 50 or so pages after that part for me.
awsome for a classic! mystery, suspention, romance, betrayal, forgiveness, patience, determination, all in one great story! I love how she would turn unforturnate events, into growing exsperences and live to be better.

Thank You, my Hero!
Enjoyable read. Lots of fun. I was talking with my 11 year old son about it, who really liked it, and we concluded that it is Twilight...for boys. A bit less mush and yuck, and more supernatural butt kicking and violence. Aliens instead of vampires. Not bad.
I have heard a lot about this book and have wanted to read it since high school, yet I have never actually seen a copy. While both holocaust stories and graphic novels are interest of mine, this makes me increasingly more interested.

Wonderful! I was so excited to be chosen to First Read" this book and received it for free from Goodreads First Reads. I do a ton of reading and it was refreshing to read a whole book with no curse words. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a great read. It kept me entertained and hanging on from the first chapter. Basically what this book comes down to is right vs. wrong, heaven vs. hell, good vs. evil. When faced with a life or death choice for you and those you love most, which will you choose? I cannot wait for the next book to come out. Mr. Mitchell you have outdone yourself.
Perhaps if I had read this when it first came out or perhaps if I had read it before such classic memoirs as The Glass Castle, Falling Leaves, Angela's Ashes, and Blackbird then maybe, maybe I would have liked Liar's Club better. But there were many parts of the book where I found myself asking, "So what?" There were some moments of intriguing writing and some horrifying things did happen to her- which is not to say that a memoir has to be all about horrifying events, just that the overall story needs to be well told and I just didn't feel that all the parts of this story were well told and it got tedious at times. Actually, the reader discovers that the mother had an incredibly heartbreaking story herself and perhaps she should have written a memoir.
A story about Percival looking for Lady Fayre (in this case a girl named Angelica Papps) and finding all kinds of craziness in academia (and in Amsterdam). It's about conferences and questing and your typical knight errant. Don't miss the full-scale re-enactment of The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock. I read this last year when I was missing being an English major. It made me glad that I didn't sleep with my professors. P.S. This book has been assigned as the pre-reading for an English class I'm taking so I'm reading it again. Unfortunately GoodReads doesn't seem to allow for re-reading. 08/17/2008
