Danny Shapiro has problems: a terrible family secret, something so terrifying neither he nor his parents can talk about it, or even look it squarely in the eye. He also has solutions: investigating UFOs and keeping a journal of his activities and his encounters with a mysterious group of three men trying to silence him. Eventually the edges of reality blur, for the reader and for Danny, in a way that reminds me of Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse V. This book is an enjoyable read. Halperin writes with careful attention to detail, and an intimacy of the subject from his own days as a teenage UFO investigator. I highly recommend this book.

This book is brutally honest and beautifully written. "And at night, waking out of a dream, overwhelmed and bewitched by the crowding apparitions, a man perceives with alarm how slight is the support, how thin the boundary that divides him from the darkness. We are little flames poorly sheltered by frail walls against the storm of dissolution and madness, in which we flicker and sometimes almost go out."

I enjoyed this but I wish Maeve Binchy would go back to writing novels with a focused plot- rather than her more recent work which feel more like collections of related short stories.

The Marked Son is a story that instantly takes ahold of the reader because the main character, Dylan, is just so enigmatic and alluring. His 17 years have been rough – with a mom that’s constantly chasing the next fling – and he’s as jaded as they come, but there’s just something about him that will pull readers in. Maybe it’s his unconcealed anger towards his mom or his ease in giving up, but I wanted things to work out for him from the beginning. Shea Berkley captures teen angst perfectly, then flips it upside down, throws in some serious abandonment issues, and adds a healthy dose of fantasy to the mix. The tidbits about Dylan’s past and minute details hint at what’s really happening, as do the chapters from an alternate, female POV, but the big reveal is something else. The mix of contemporary with fantasy is done flawlessly and seemingly effortlessly. The story progresses from a simple, angsty teen story, to so much more. Dylan’s dreams and the foreshadowing escalate the tension and suspense, until the readers get that BANG moment along with Dylan. And once it happens, things go from uncomplicated to insane. And I loved it. The Marked Son is a captivating contemporary that turns into a surprising and unique fantasy. Dylan will find his way into the hearts of readers, as will his grandparents, the mysterious girl Kera, and the new friends Dylan makes along the way. If you’re a fan of contemporary and fantasy, and love a mix of the two, The Marked Son is the perfect book for you.

FINALLY finished this monster that I've wanted to read for 7 years. John Adams is my hero, you guys. He's pretty much the perfect historical figure. Forthright, upstanding, lovably funny, and his personal life stands up to all the scrutiny you can throw at it. What a great man. If only he was running for President this year . . .

Beautiful and touching, Lauren does an awesome job in this book. Sam is real and you can easily understand her actions. Many people talk about what they would do if today was their last day, Sam has 7 "last days" and she thinks about doing everything most people think about (and actually does a few), but she starts to realize what she should really do in her last day, and what is really special for her. Perfect, totally one of my favorites now.
