The single most frightening book I ever read. Bradbury wrote this in 1950/53. How could he have known??? The most frightening thing to me is that the government did not impose the No Books thing. The people gave the books up on their own to watch interactive reality shows on wall size televisions or listen to their Ipods. The people gave up books because they cause pain...they make people feel things. In my own experience, I have asked several friends who are big Oprah fans if they read her book selections. They all said they do not because they are too depressing...they make you feel things. Easier to turn on the boob tube and go numb. Turn off the tv. Ditch the Ipod. Then grab a book because there's dew on the grass in the morning.

There were some funny parts, to be sure, but I guess I didn't find it as hilarious as most others seem to. It is very short, and we listened to it in the car. (I'm glad my kids were watching a movie in the back seat, because this wouldn't have been a good book for them at age 5 and 3. They wouldn't have understood the humor, and the smart alecky tone isn't something I'd appreciate them picking up on!) Definitely makes you reminisce about those awkward middle school years and dread them for your children!

Single sentence summary: The year is 1904 and Edna wants to be a reporter, which isn't seen a very feminine goal for a girl but when finds herself caught up with Harry Houdini and a high school girl has gone missing she might get her lucky break and become a real reporter. I enjoyed this historical mystery. I found the characters engaging and believable. Edna wants more for herself that being a housewife and believes herself to be too plain to attract a man's attention anyway. She runs into Harry Houdini who is visiting friends in her little town. Soon afterward a young girl from the high school turns up missing and Edna asks Houdini to help her figure out how she left the high school without anyone seeing. Escape Artist had an interesting setup with a variety of characters that I founding engaging. I wasn't sure what I would make of this book. I've read books with women in the 1900-1950s and the male character tend to be written at the same. They are overbearing, egotistical jerks but this book presented only one character that way. Instead, the male characters were varied and while I felt that sometimes they behaved in a way to humor Edna, they also behaved in a believable and practical manner. Edna writes about the social things going on her little town without touching on crime or politics, which worked for me. Politics may not have been ladylike but reporting on someone woman's fund raiser or something seemed reasonable to have a young female reporter write on. I enjoyed the mystery aspect of this book and it kept me guessing for a quite a while. I thought this was a great book overall and looking forward to reading more about Edna's adventures (if there are more). 4.25 Stars. I received a copy of this as an ebook from the publisher via netgalley.

I enjoyed the story despite the overkill of Evangelical celebration. I find Christians who criticize the content--as I often find in most everything else they do--to be overly fearful, suspicious, and above all ignorant and childish. The points in this book are meant to express valid, candid emotions that anyone who has suffered a tragedy in life may express--or not express. The fact that Evangelicals have misused it is neither here nor there. It's a book. It's FICTION. It's an artistic expression, like it or not like it I felt the same about the The Davinci Code although I never read it. Why do Christians express their shallow, albeit abundant inability to grasp that these books are fiction and not intended as some sort of updated version of "The Book of Mormon?" It's absurd. The books is an easy read. I recommend it to anyone, like myself, who has been the family member of a murder victim and is going through all the emotions of grief. I would also recommend "A Grief Observed."

This was the best Dream-Hunter book to date and I loved seeing the interplay of all the gods but at the same time, it was too light and too easy. It's like these are stepping stone books to get us where we're actually going which I assume will be about Nick and Jaden - not in one book but as the next big places to stop. It was enjoyable but the best parts were not about Jericho and Delphine.

Captivating study of a young girl who misinterprets an incident and the lifelong ramifications of her account of events. Interesting family study, birth order differences, and account of wartime emotional tolls. Good writing and of course much better than the movie.
It's 100 stories so some will be better than others. I would describe them as imaginative, thrilling, moving, thought provoking, prescient, nostalgic and extremely well written; I love the way he uses language. I will never 'finish' this collection or Volume 2; I have been reading and re-reading these stories for forty years and see no reason to stop now.

Awesome book and author of great integrity and writing skill. Received the Pulitzer Prize. Two inter-related personal stories woven around the conquest of the American West. Re-read the book just recently, and plan to again at some future date.

This is a hard one... I want to love this book but I have to say I got bogged down in the final chapters...and I don't really understand, understand what happened. I mean, I get *what* happened I just didn't understand the tie-in to the bigger picture. I think this book requires a second read. I also have to say that, being a David Mitchell fan, I could tell that this was his first book. I was good for a first book but his later work is more polished.
